1. I voted "asshole" without knowing this new song.
I hate red state humor and "humorists" of that ilk.

with some label.

7. Oh come on. You know what I mean.
Gallagher, Larry the Cable guy, Ray Stevens etc. do a brand of "humor" that is now called Red State humor. What I said doesn't mean that I hate every single person in the red states or that every person in those states fall into this catagory. It just means that I hate this brand of comedy. Gimmie a break with the hyper sensitivity.

10. Thanks for clearing that up
But since there is still a lot of red state bashing going on, and it strikes me as playing into the GOP insistence that DEMS are elitist. I like to question any drive by, knee-jerk 'red state' comments like that.

gimme a break with the hyper sensitivity too ;) There is method to my madness. I see the DEMS making serious headway in the heartland and I would like the momentum to not hit speed bumps of generalizations about all those in 'red states'. I also don't like it when wingers lump all New Englanders into the 'eastern elitist' pigeon hole.

We ALL bleed red :D

...you won't have anyone take issue that way.

Saying "I hate red state comedy and comedians" shouldn't require any further explanation.

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed with him. Again.

I waited for years to get to see his show. Basically he appears to be a hardcore republican who thinks protesting or objecting to be traitorous; an attitude that he incorporated into his show. I won't be going back.

8. I am a bit surprised and very disappointed in him with this song...
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 03:14 PM by WePurrsevere
Some of his other "comedy" songs like Mississippi Squirrel Revival and The Streak are truly funny but this is so horribly mean spirited and neo-conish.

Sadly it looks like he drank the Kool-aid rather heavily if he can't see that Bush or FEMA hold no responsibilty for what happened. "There is none so blind as he who will not see..." :(

edited for more clarity, etc

12. Quite a few of his songs are funny.
Sittin' up with the dead. I can't remember the name, but the one where they get lost and end up in a backwoods church when the rattlesnakes are passed out is hilarious. Virgil and the Moonshot. Too drunk to fish.

And at the other end of the spectrum from the new monstrosity is Everything is Beautiful. But I guess he doesn't think that applies if you're a democrat and/or object to the hatchet job Bush has done to the country? Like I said, I won't be going back.

17. Yeah... I just don't understand how some folks can see things with their
own eyes and still believe that Bush is a great leader, FEMA is wonderful and they did right by NO and th people that lived (and died) there.

All I can figure is that folks like Mr. Stevens and the % that still approve of him (according to polls) have wrapped themselves up so tight in the flag that it's cut off all circulation to their brains.

4. checked ASSHOLE...definitely after reading the lyrics...
The New Battle of New Orleans

In Twenty-O-Five Katrina let 'er rip
Took dead aim at the coast of Mississip'
Blew Pascagoula and some other towns to smithereens
Then she set her sights on the town of New Orleans

And the levees caved in and the water started risin'
And the people started climbin' up on the roof
Reporters showed up and started televisin'
And started pointing fingers and messin' with the truth

Chorus:
And they blamed George Bush and they blamed the head of FEMA
Global warming played a part in it too don't you know
Louie Farrakan said Bush blew up the levees
Well I guess he saw it all from his U.F.O.

They had a whole bunch of school busses ready to go
But they never cranked 'em up 'cause the mayor said "no"
Said they weren't good enough for folks to ride on
Then he told 'em all to walk to the Super Dome

Law and order left town and the gangs took over
And committed every kind of unthinkable sin
They shot up the town and trashed the Super Dome
And they showed it on Fox and CNN

Chorus:
And they stole TV's and they stole fine jewelry
Everybody got a new pair of Nike tennis shoes
Stole guns, DVD's, shopping carts full of beer (fur coats, cold beer)
Well they even stole some stuff that they couldn't even use

Then the mayor started cussin' and he started complainin'
Defendin' his actions on the radio
Said the Federal Government was at fault and he was blamin'
Everybody but hisself and Governor Blanco

Chorus:
And he blamed George Bush and he blamed the head of FEMA
Then a bunch of other politicians all jumped in
And the Reverend Jesse Jackson just couldn't stay away
He just had to show up and pontificate again

11. Hey RAY! Remember when you wrote this?
Everything Is Beautiful

There is none so blind as he who will not see
We must not close our minds we must let our thoughts be free
For every hour that passes by, you know the world gets a little bit older
It's time to realize that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder

Chorus

Everything is beautiful in its own way
Like a starry summer night or a snow covered winter's day
Ah, sing it children, everybody's beautiful in their own way
Under God's heaven the world's gonna find a way

We shouldn't care about the length of his hair or the color of his skin
Don't worry about what shows from without but the love that lives within
We gonna get it all together now and everything's gonna work out fine
Just take a little time to look on the good side my friend
And straighten it out in your mind

13. Even By Ray Stevens' Low Standards, That's A Pathetic Song

He deserves an "Asshole" rating for this, without a doubt.

If I hear it on any of my local radio stations, I'm going to phone in a complaint. And you know what's really sickening? The redneck, shit-kicker stations that choose to play this nasty little ditty are probably the same ones who are still refusing to play any Dixie Chicks songs---continuing to punish them for being right.....

19. Ray Stevens' Ancestry

I'm dredging this up from the past, but I think I read one time that one of Ray Stevens' forebearers was someone prominent in the Confederacy. Anyone else heard that?

Judging from the lyrics of this new "song," it's easy to believe.....

27. There are quite q few southerners that have Confederate ancestors....
...but the vast majority of those folks haven't allowed themselves to lose sight of what's right and wrong.

Based on the fact that quite a few Confederate vets headed west and north after the Civil War to find work and/or a new place to live, there might be a fair percentage of people living in those regions now who may also have Confederate ancestors.

In summary, anyone can be an asshole, not just those with Consederate ancestors.

25. Racist drool from the singer of "Ahab the Arab."
Like Coulter, he knows who is likely to butter his bread, and panders to that lowest common denominator. This song is for FReeperville; they will eat anything up about their savior, George W.

When I was a child growing up in New Orleans the adults around me used to play his racist shit and I didn't know better. But I tapped my foot, the music was pretty and I memorized the words even though I didn't understand them. You're a fucking cancer Ray. Get it!

30. Good lord, what a dick.
he seems to be just as guilty of "blaming" people with this song.

This vitrollic crap is beyond simply being a *-supporter. It just seems hateful and hurtful to New Orleans, Nagin, and Katrina survivors. Since many country-singers have roots in the Parish and Bayou country that was ravaged, you'd think Stevens would have a little more tact about this topic. I guess mony and fame are his ambitions.

I used to be somewhat fond of Stevens, but I never want to hear his music again after seeing those lyrics.
