ad industry use of minorities to perpetuate stereotypes....
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 11:39 PM by bliss_eternal
there's an ad running, that make me sick.

an asian actor/comedian has created a gold adorned character--some sort of hip hop video nightmare brought to life. complete with sing song cadence, wanna be hustler, playa' pimp fantasy role playing for the sake of cheap laughs, who stands on a pyramid of women, and seems to speak with a form of ebonics. :grr::mad:

while i don't expect much from the advertising industry, i'd like to think i don't have to turn on the tv and find yet another faction of ethnic man, perpetuating the ridiculous, "hustler got it going on" stereotype, that has grown to epic proportions with the popularity of certain hip hop dudes. the same guys that seem to have changed "pimping" to a verb that is something to aspire to, as opposed to the reality--a criminal, who exploits and abuses women.

i sincerely dislike seeing black men play the "exploitation of women is making me rich and cool" role. so much so, that i choose not to view such music videos, nor do i support the music that speaks of, or shows such.

so no, i don't think it's funny, or cute to see an asian man doing this shit.

what's worse? the fact that the asshole in the ad, isn't just some typical guy trying to make a buck in entertainment. he's a fucking md....yes a doctor. he went to med school prior to pursuing entertainment, and was practicing as a physician while trying to get work in in the industry. my point being that he's educated, and i'd think he'd know better. but apparently, i'm wrong. what-fuckin-ever, makes you popular in the eyes of the media, i guess...:eyes: (sigh) :puke:

the ad, is below:

1. And it's a double whammy in a way
The asian male, often UNDER sexualized in the media, using the sterotype of the black male. who is OVER sexualized in popular culture. The little Pan-Asian guy, the big tall Black Basketball player.

BTW, I work with a lot of doctors-- don't expect too much, their education is sadly lacking a a lot of areas, or that part of it simply ignored. I am seeing more and more strong minded women who don't mind the word 'feminist' one bit though.

I was looking around at this site, that had this to say; (a disclaimer; I like a certain amount of rap music and I don't find it to be more sexist than, say hard rock or heavy metal, which I also like, but for either it's a process of sorting wheat from chaff)

"Rap Music
Negative stereotypes of Blacks are a staple of Black music videos that glorify gangsterism. In Rap music and videos, the minstrel-show plantation has been born again as the "hood." While the setting has changed from an idyllic plantation to the mean streets of urban America, the process is the same: a black culture is being marketed for white profit, with black performers portraying racist stereotypes. Performers claim that they represent authentic black America, while critics decry the glorification of ugly caricatures and its effects on Black youth."

...and it's so interesting, you chose that, as every time i see the ad, i think "what a fucking minstrel show." :grr::mad: it's so disturbing, to me.

i could have stated my issue of his background better, sorry for that.

it's not that i have a higher expectation of a physician. not at all. i *do* have a higher expectation from an alleged, educated guy. (though, all things considered--i probably should not ;))...at some point, i know he's had some sociology, anthropology--some fuckin'-ology that would have shared some enlightened discourse on oppression, stereotypes, etc.

i'm guessing that his willingness to create such a character, stems from some personal issues/demons, though. something that makes him feel some kind of way, by utilizing such a persona, and believing it is humourous. giant patriarchy enabling, asshat that he apparently is. :puke:
