Poll question: Congo question, intentional....? Please share thoughts....
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 03:41 AM by bliss_eternal
Given the controversy around Secretary of State Clinton's comments in the Congo last week, I'm sincerely interested in the some perspective on this, from feminist progressives.

Does anyone think or feel that the student's questions were an intentional attempt to embarass Hilary Clinton (when the Congo's history on women's issues is taken into consideration)? Was this an effort to put the uppity woman in her place?

This poll is not an effort to bait others into discussion for debate. I'm sincerely curious what others thoughts are on this issue. It's frequently difficult to gauge, from the discussion of these topics in the main forums. Anyone identifying in a "pro-woman" stance, is all too often "shouted down" in GD and GD-P. So, I'm bringing it here in hopes of seeing/hearing women's thoughts on this.

:hi:

1. Not necessarily the questioner himself.
He apologized later, recognizing he pissed her off. It was a poorly thought out question that perhaps, PERHAPS was innocent. He could have been trying to be an asshole, I don't know.

I simply recognize that Bill Clinton is very popular in many countries in Africa.

What *is* intentional as far as I'm concerned is the disgusting media drooling over her response. What we have here, is the Western media trying to embarrass an uppity women. The whole 'translation' error bullshit. "He was only asking about Obama" doesn't seem to be very accurate. Even so, Secretary Clinton isn't responsible for translation errors. Here she is talking about horrid crimes against women, and our lovely media wants to turn it into a tabloid pissing contest between her and her husband.

But the most disgusting thing about it all is if she hadn't responded the way she had, her Congo trip would have gotten far less attention. It would seem that many, many people want to speculated on tabloid bullshit and ignore the appalling Congo record of violence against women. And then try to sound self righteous about it. Totally pisses me off.

I don't know why I expect different from the rape culture I and all women live in though.

2. I agree. We don't know if he was trying to embarrass her.
But we know the media was definitely doing it's best to embarrass her.
