Why are there so many ads like this, (and since when is this legal):

I've also seen an explosion of ads for "female" everything....bartenders, car sales personnel, baristas, servers, etc. requesting/demanding applicants provide a headshot, with their application/resume.

Excuse me, but if not a professional acting job or cattle call for a commercial, etc--isn't it illegal to ask applicants to apply with photographs? And isn't it also illegal to specify a sex for applicants?


I know Craigslist is free (or a small fee) for job ads, but I would think they have to work within some standards?

I'm guessing people that create these ads think maybe craigslist won't monitor crap like this. But I'm starting to flag them as I see them. If anyone reading this frequently browses on craigslist and ever see's anything like this, please do the same. I think it's shitty that creeps are preying on young women that don't know any better.

2. I have two points:

One: I just saw an ad for a part time job at the County Pleas Court. "Male wanted to collect urine specimens. $12.26/hour."

I had to learn 4 different computer systems, solve problems created by an IT dept. that has mush for brains, and deal with asshole customers for $11/hour.

I would much prefer to collect piss.

If I could lift 50 lbs, I could get $14.31/hour at Target. 30 lbs, $12. 31/hour. Dealing with customers, $9.65/hour.

Two: All of these ads asking for 'attractive,' 'pretty,' etc. females is really getting on my nerves. Especially when the dewds wanting to look at pretty women are dog-butt ugly. I seriously want to start a campaign where ugly men (on the inside and out) are handed a paper bag and told to put it on whenever out in public. Maybe I'll call it 'the too nasty to look at' campaign.

I hear you on the pay disparities. Even in the service industry you see it. Maitre d's make more than hostesses. Male waiters always seem to command better tips than females, unless of course the female is "hawt." Something about men taking on work that is so obviously beneath them, seems to make their tip rates better. :shrug:

When I worked retail, women that went to school for fashion were making less than guys in the industry with no education at all AND (this part really chapped me) were more likely to get positions as district managers (move up in the company). :grr::mad: Several women I worked with at the time (managers, etc.), started looking around for other retail companies with reputations for promoting women to apply to. This particular chain didn't promote women to district positions and still doesn't(from what I've seen).

But I guess when I think of it, why would retail stores be any different than the fashion industry at large? How many women (w/few exceptions) go to the top of fashion? Have lines donning their name (that aren't also pop stars)? The fashion industry seems to be predominately white and male for the most part (again, very few notable exceptions).

My employer has hired primarily young/younger women in the Contact Center...it's a brand new e-tail selling shoes. The boys who set up this biz have done a half-ass job. But what is so disappointing is that the women are so Stepford....discussing fashion, celebrities, or their religion.

I am beginning to see that the position of Hermit should be regarded as one of high moral and intellectual stature. Now, just got to figure how to get $$ to the Hermit!!

We're back in the '50's wearing 4 inch heels made in China...you know the culture that likes to bind women's feet. I know these manufacturers are laughing at the cruelty of their joke on women. I was absolutely shocked at the Fall Shoes...and was in total agony having to sit in a room and discuss them for over an hour. I was forced to look thru Vogue and Glamour and find pictures of similar shoes and cut them out. I said I was allergic to the glue so at least I didn't have to paste them on a piece of paper.

I ended up going to the restroom and had a small tear over the state of the american women. WTF has happened? I know...TV, advertising, media and a strategic plan to put women in their place.

8. I've been noticing shoes as well

Since they are a pet peeve. Who in the fuck thinks shoes like that are ok?

Since I have the capacity to be quite obnoxious in real life (imagine that) I bring up shoes and mating posture, with a a possible pseudo-evolutionary coorelation between lipstick (I've since added those "pouty" lips so in style these days) and the backside swelling of orangutans in estrous to the young women I work with as often as I can. Pisses them off, but it makes them think.

It one thing when you're looking for a mate, or a sex partner. It entirely something else as an acceptable fashion.

I'm still waiting for ahem *all* female polititians to give up certain styles from patriarchy. Including fucked up shoes, but also pancake make up. Yuk.

Unfortunetly, they'd all have to do it at once.

Seriously, it's probably the economy. In a sexist world, an economic downturn seems to ramp up offers of jobs to women involving using bodies, looks and youth. Of course it happens even in economic good times, but women then have or should have more real choices than quasi-prostitution. We've BEEN prostitutes dammit, been there and done that in good times and bad.

Time for a woman-positive economy. We've never had one to my knowledge, ever.

It would be profoundly more honest to see ads exactly like this. I could almost respect the dudes placing such ads if they y owned their true motivation behind requesting "chick applicants." Defining gender of applicants is the equivalent of saying,"...plan to be sexually harassed."

I saw a really interesting one, allegedly placed by a gay couple asking for a young male with a nice physique and "fit" to be their houseboy.

You are absolutely right, we ain't NEVER had a woman-positive economy or government. The SYSTEM always depends upon women fuckin' up, literally. Playin' the game. Usin' our T&A. It really irritates me when women attain power on their own then fold on women's issues just to stay popular in the Boy's Club.

Palin has so much baggage, it's easy to see what's happening here. The repub's have given McCain his Swan Song. His time at being a Presidential candidate. Maybe he knows, maybe not, but he is a sacrifice for the R's. They WANT A DEMOCRAT IN OFFICE WHEN THE SYSTEM COLLAPSES! Frankly, I think they are being as outrageous as possible to bait the insecure Dems who will go nutz with it and alienate their own folks.

12. I had to turn off NPR one afternoon this week because of a fashion discussion

Two women were guests and their comments sickened me. Both were commenting on how glad they were that the days of boring suits and floppy bow ties were long gone--"good riddance", "women have so many choices now", bla, bla, bla. Now, I've always hate those conservative clothes too, and things are more casual today than they were in the 80s, but I work in a male-dominated industry. I'm here to tell you that men, regardless of age, aren't any better at taking women in sexy, fashionable clothing seriously today, than they were 20-30 years ago.

Of course neither women cited a single bit of research to back them up. I'm sure if I listened longer, I would have learned that they were (a) fashion editors for the local paper, (b) retailers, or (c) otherwise employed by a fashion industry. They have something to sell so they say whatever achieves that end or whatever they wish were true, rather than what IS true.

These "experts" then commented on how women politicians HAD to look good and we should just ACCEPT the fact that people were going to notice what women wear and comment on women's attire to a greater extent than they would men's. The host didn't even raise the question about whether that should go unchallenged or what problems this causes for female politicians or for women and girls in general.

...it's easy to lose patience with crap like that. No one bothering to question the standards in place, or call them out for what they are. Just more demand that women fall in line and play the game.

I now understand why I hated the retail enviroment so much. The constant focus on superficial bullshit depressed the hell out of me. I recall going through a stack of applications with my manager for sales associates I'd interviewed. Silly me, pointing out which young women seemed responsible based on prior experiences and how they responded to certain interview questions, their references, etc.

Her responses and applicant concerns:
"...was she cute?"
"....What did she wear to the interview?"
....I liked what that one wore--she was REALLY pretty!"

Didn't seem concerned at all if they seemed capable of doing the job--primary concern was how they looked and what they wore.

They're illegal.

Craigslist got hit with a fair-housing lawsuit when they did not curb ads that violated the Fair Housing Act. Why not equal opportunity in employment as well?

Whenever I see one asking for a specific gender.

The problem is, unless others see it and flag it--it may stay up. I think it has to get multiple flags for them to check into it, pull it, and ban the people from posting future ads.

I don't get the sense that many of today's generation knows it's illegal to specify gender. :shrug:
