I can't do this forever.
But I can today.

I can focus on tomorrow, if I want to. I can get so afraid of how I'm going to screw it all up tomorrow. I can worry that I'm not going to call my sponsor tomorrow, and that I'm going to relapse tomorrow. I can become terrified at the thought of losing Sarah tomorrow. I can wring my hands over how I'm going to slip back into my old habits and the old lies tomorrow. With all that taken into account, my situation is hopeless, and I can't do this forever.

But I can today. Even if I don't think I can do this for another hour, then I can at least do this for another minute. If not another minute, then just this moment. I can't do it on my own, though. In my darkest days, I know that I have the power to be able to white-knuckle it through that series of moments, minutes, and hours. If I don't find my higher power, however, I will lose my grip.

And on that note, I may not need my higher power tomorrow. But I do today.

1. 'xactly!
just one minute, then an hour, then a day and it's one more day of recovery

as you get those days, you learn the tools to go forward

it's a miracle in the truest sense of the word

2. By Jove, you've got it!
Some days, Varkam, it comes down to one hour at a time or less.
This has been my personal experience.

But that works.

I can plan for tomorrow, but I have no control over it.

Today is what I know.

;-)

6. There was a great cartoon in the "Shambala Sun" magazine
A few months ago. It depicted a woman showing her husband a bar graph. The first bar goes up to the ceiling, the second is barely an inch tall. The caption was "These are the things you were afraid would happen, and those are the things that actually happened". It fit my alcoholic mind so well I cut it out and taped it to my fridge.

7. That is excellent, Judy.
And it's so true.

At least 90% of the things I worry about never happen!
This is especially true when it comes to my kids-
one human and two feline.

I'm a slow learner in this area.

9. Or as Mark Twain wrote. . .
"I am an old man and have known many troubles, most of which never happened."
