1. Don't think, just go.
It's like jumping off the high dive, or maybe pulling off a band aid. The discomfort of dreading the activity far outweighs the actual discomfort of *doing* the activity. Good luck!

2. If I can do it, you can do it.
I'm not shy, but I'm very private, and to compound matters, while the city I live in is technically big, the "locals" here are a very small town in and of themselves. We all grew up here, and most of us live in the same 10 square miles or so (near the oceanfront -- it's a resort town). EVERYONE knows my family. I was living in fear that if I went to a meeting, someone would recognize me.

But, finally, a few posters here talked me off the roof about it. So what if I see someone I know? If I see them, they have a problem too. And people around here probably already know that I like my wine a little too much anyway. So, I took the plunge and went. I've tried several groups, but you know what? I'm still going to the first group I went to, which I have affectionately dubbed the "Grandma and Grandpa Group." I'm the youngest there by at least 15 years, but I've found that age means nothing in this context except extra wisdom to share. They tell me that I've invigorated their group, reminding them why they're there. It had evidently been getting a little too "coffee social hour" over the years. ;)

So, just give it a shot. Worst case scenario: you get zero out of it and then you don't have to go back. But at least then you know you tried.

I'm pulling for you, w8liftinglady. I'm one week sober today. You can do it.

3. After you have been going to meetings for year -

check back and tell us how shy you are.

Before getting sober, I was what I considered pathologically shy. I could not make eye
contact or speak to anyone about anything. After telling my story a time or two, I found
that I am actually a pretty good speaker.

There is nothing like being in a room of like minded souls to bring you out of your shell.

Go to the meeting. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

You are on the right track. OB
