Does anyone else find that during the time of a national tragedy,
you especially miss someone who is gone?

In October, my mother will have been gone four years. She followed current events and politics closely all her adult life; she couldn't stand Chimpy McCokespoon or any of his crooked family; she had always been wise to the Republican use of the photo-op.

Holidays were never terribly meaningful for me, but times like these I really, really miss my mother. Not only because the two of us could talk politics, but as my mother, she could be very reassuring.

And with the endless parade of incompetence and indifference in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, who couldn't use a little reassuring?

I'm going out of town on Monday morning for about a week, but I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts.

1. Actually, I though a lot about my mom during Katrina, but in many ways
it wasn't just thinking about others who lost their family members, I thought about how horrified she would have been.

in fact I find I often "pray" to my mom since I believe she lives on as a spirit, and I pleaded with her to help the people down on the Gulf Coast somehow. Knowing how she could never stand people in misery I am sure she did what she could.
