Neil Young "Don't Be Denied" and Nils Lofgren "The Loner: Nils Plays Neil"
Excellent documentary on the brilliant Neil Young. Was a fan of CSN&Y, Buffalo Springfield and Nils Lofgren ("Cry Tough") ... never realized Nils played with Neil. Listening to the "Nils Plays Neil" CD. Recommended. Stripped down, just Nils' voice and guitar or piano. Elemental.

"If there's anyone who knows Neil Young's music, it's Nils Lofgren. The current E Street guitarist was 18 when he joined Young and his band, and he appeared on After the Gold Rush and Tonight's the Night. Here, Lofgren reinterprets his former boss's folkier songs, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and piano. It's all pleasant and heartfelt. On some tunes, including "I Am a Child," he sounds exactly like Young, vibrato and all. He offers gentler versions of rockers such as "The Loner" and "Like a Hurricane." Unfortunately, he defangs the Buffalo Springfield classics "Mr. Soul" and "Flying on the Ground."

Dunno, RS dude, defanging ain't so bad when the whole CD sounds so clear, so honest, so fresh. Great story in liner notes about Young loaning Nils a Martin D-18 to play on "After The Goldrush" (photo of the guitar inside the album cover). Neil gave him that guitar as a gift. Nils plays it on this album.

Check it out!
