I cant be racist, I have interracial sex!

One of the big myths out there is the idea that interracial relationships are inherently good for ending racism. Weve all heard the utopian notions that we should keep mixing and soon well all be mixed and there will be no more racism!

The problem with this idea is that it assumes interracial couples and mixed race people themselves cannot be racist. And of course, we all know thats not true. Check out former Nebraska Senator John DeCamps description of his Vietnamese wife as a war trophy for just one example.

As I wrote in a post last year, just because you sleep with/live with/marry/date someone of another race doesnt make you automatically not racist. After all, slave masters had no problem maintaining their racist beliefs against blacks while raping their slaves and fathering mixed children with them. Neither did Strom Thurmond. And all you have to do is read Susan Crain Bakoss article to see that sex doesnt cancel out racism. If anything, sex and intimacy have always been intricately intertwined with oppression.

June 2005: Barry Bonds defends himself against allegations of racism by using his white wife as evidence that he doesnt hate white people
December 2005: Officer Andrew Drew Cohen of the San Francisco police department was disciplined for producing an in-house video that was full of racist and sexist stereotypes. His response?Im a liberal Berkeley Jew with two biracial children and therefore the notion Im racist is ridiculous.

Comments by op:

You know, this issue has troubled me before even here on DU. I've encountered at least a couple of members that "use" their status as an interracial couple to denounce the bigotry and intolerance they've expressed on the boards. As if that somehow should invalidate the other obvious racially intolerant comments they've made.

I found one member that does this, particularly disturbing. He/she shares the bigoted questions he/she's asked about "having sex" with a person of color, :eyes: in a creepy, tasteless, locker room way--not in a "I'm disgusted that I was asked this" way. It made me feel very bad for the person he/she is involved with.

Anyway, interesting read. Enjoy and feel free to comment. ;)

1. Even on DU
there are multiple idiots that use the same line. I don't know if they're deluded, dishonest, or just plain dense.

2. Probably some of all of the above.
I went at it pretty hot and heavy with a guy like this (back during the M. Richards incident). He tried sharing his "credential" :eyes: with me. All that did, was make me feel very sad for the person (of color) he's involved with.

My concern is more that partner. How can the partners of people like this be so deluded as to thinking this person is "supportive" of their issues, and them? :(
