.... one tiny suggestion ......

Paint the wall color as an accent to the inset area above the fireplace. Not the whole inset flat surface, but the angled strip that conncts the high level with the low level ...... sort of a frame of color ..... the fireplace seems to have lost some pop to the bold wall color and this would help tie it all together.

3. Or, add an applique in the same white as the inset
As a designer, I think that painting it the same as the wall color will make it look choppy across the wall expanse. But, applique(s) added to the inset and in the smae color as the fireplace framing, will give visual texture.

Lowe's carries quite a few appliques.

the shelves seem to be floating. Although I understand what your saying, my idea wasn't to have them pop out. Just bring the wall into focus. The room isn't that big so I don't think the shelves get loss in this room.
