2. For some reason the translucence isn't visible to the naked eye, but shows
clearly in photos.

result that changes everything. White Balance brings out the translucent properties. The original didn't really need WB, but I decided to check out the auto white balance in GIMP. I'd missed that property of the flower until I played around with levels, now I can see it in the flower when I see it in nature.

Check out Harvey Darky's flowers. I really like the oil paint feel of the second image. Quite romantic.
