Do you all remember when some people changed their names
after the election?

Would those of you who did so please let me know who you used to be? I'm so confused.

That's a fantastic list that I'm sure will be very informative out in GD and other places. I printed it out for instant reference.

I knew that some people here in our group had changed their names, but I couldn't remember who to what. It's kind of like taking the time to get to know someone who you've just met, and then finding out that you've already known them for a long time, like reincarnation or something.

3. I saw that thread referenced in a GD post after the name amnesty
and thought it would come in handy for the DUzy Awards, so I bookmarked it.

Your reincarnation comparison is right on.

So "2001, A Space Odyssey," one of my all-time favorite movies. :smoke:

7. Mine too!
I did a lot of searches before I found a still frame from that sequence that was this crisp.

14. Here's a sharing re: 2001
Hiking up toward the park land above Kandy after the end of the bus run, my companion and I were invited into a modest summer home for a chat by some Brit. OK, take a rest and have some tea, indulge the guy and see what this turn reveals. Hello, I'm Arthur Clark, what are your names, etc. Small talk turned to leisure reading preferences. I mentioned SF. On "who?" I dredged up Asimov and maybe a few more, and said it was mostly Ace doublebacks and essentially that it was just cheap entertainment.

Nearly all post High School reading at that time had been related to my studies or regarding the war and the why of it, so although I had enjoyed the genre I was not very current or even particularly interested at that time. "Carpet bombings" (sounds almost benign) and the mass slaughter in Indochina, killing kids at Kent and Jackson state and killing members of the BP in their beds. I had been active against this evil, and continued after returning, but a highly improbable set of events had put me there in Ceylon (the second most significant and formative, after Antioch, experience ever).

He then asked if I'd seen 2001, a relatively recent blockbuster, so it was not a surprising question given the flow. I said I had gone to see it but walked out in the first 5-10 minutes because the opening was so overdone and boring. Years later, of course, I saw his picture in the back of some new SF book, and realized at that time our host had been Arthur C. Clarke. He never ID'd himself as the author or showed any pique, and I like to believe he looked back on that encounter with a pleased chuckle and sense of we-are-family-ness, as do I.

15. Wow, great story, and how gracious of him.
I know 2001 was overblown, but since I was flying rather high the first time I saw it, sitting on the front row of the Todd-AO theater in Denver, it was all just trippy as hell to me. I still don't know what it meant though.

9. Oh Blue, thanks for asking this!
And thanks to JeffR for posting that link! I've been totally confused about who is who since the name amnesty. Sometimes I'll read a post and like it, and check out the poster--who turns out to have been around since 2003. then I'll be like, "How has this person never been on my radar screen before?" But of course they probably were, just under another name. It's very confusing indeed!

17. How many amnesties have there been...?
The only one I can think of was after the 2004 election. I took the opportunity at that time to change my username from the more-boring "JDWalley" to the one I have now, but, since I didn't join the Photo Group until after that, I doubt anyone here would remember me from my previous identity.
