The front of the front
We took a little road trip south this morning since the day dawned partly cloudy and quite beautiful, but we drove straight into a storm front. Where I took this picture, at the edge of the storm, the wind was blowing about 50 mph and it was just starting to rain. We thought we were driving into a foggy patch, but it turned out to be spray from the whitecaps.

The rest of the trip involved rain and snow, not the best for photo ops, but we still had a good time.

1. It's beautiful
but where is your snow?

This Marylander is having trouble believing Alaska is so bereft. We'll happily send you some from here.

:hi:

2. Oh, it's really, really warm here,

38 degrees right now at 5:00 p.m. We still have a fair amount of snow on the ground here in Anchorage, but down along Turnagain Arm it's almost completely bare. Warm temperatures and high winds just completely stip the snow away. There's lots of free-running water and high avalanche danger in the areas where there is snow. We lost three people over the weekend to backcountry avalanches, including the president of Conoco-Phillips Alaska.

The bushes and birch trees are starting to look really pink like they do in the spring just before they bud out. I know it's way too early for that, but the color was really striking.

We frequently get thaws and freezes this time of year, so it's not too out of the ordinary, just kind of ironic that you guys are getting all the snow.

P.S. In case there's any confusion, that IS water, not land, in the original picture. The railroad runs alongside Turnagain Arm, which is kind of a fjord-like thing.

3. I love that 38 degrees is really warm
although, I guess it is even here, in winter.

I figured it was water, but you can see some land, in the foreground.

4. That is lovely
The way the mountains are just visible through the mist/clouds and fading into the light... Gorgeous.

Reminds me of some of the country around here, minus the floating ice of course.

7. Great photos--love the front coming in
Those muted colors are great.

Every time you post here it reminds me to check out your pic of the day. Those are fun to look at every week or so.
