Besides, I think it's too subjective a subject. I'd hate to think a photo of a lipstick girl would win just because the girl is pretty, not based on composition, skill or originality. That would really piss off my inner feminist, plus open the Photography Group up to the gender flame wars we see so often.

Of course, Dear Raging, I know you are pure of heart and camera. I trust you to be working from the artist's perspective. I'm just saying... possible pin-ups in the photo contest? It's just asking for trouble, imo.

Photos of a woman putting on lipstick, teenage boys trying to get a girl's attention, etc., would need releases from everyone in the picture. Candids of people you happened to notice just wouldn't cut it.

There's also an establishment in Fairbanks called "Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn," but that's a little too far to go for a photo.

If model releases aren't signed, then some of us, and especially the winner, would be up into legal troubles if our subjects found out about it. I have lots of people shots, but no model releases.

16. keep in mind there are many ways to denote sex

it doesn't have to be naked people. Shapes of architecture are some times sexual. Some sculptures are phallic or naked. A cu of a cherry, an apple, panties lying on a beach, two feet sticking out from under a blanket, a contour of someone with a sheet over them, a cu of a mouth with deep red lipstick. That's what I've come up with in about 10 seconds...

People coming up with their own definition of sex through a photographer's eyes. What I will do during the next few days is come up with a list of possible themes for next month's contest and have everybody vote for the theme they want.

I will include "sex" but I will also include several other themes as well.

You shouldn't recuse yourself because no matter what the theme ends up being, you can still submit a photo even if you will be camping throughout august.

Baltimore's own little "Red Light District" (aka The Block) would be a fantastic place to get photos for this theme.

Luckily, The Block isn't just hookers (though there are plenty of those) but also all the strip clubs, adult movie stores, $.25 booths, etc. It's kinda cool. I think I could get a good picture there.

23. Our Fourth Avenue downtown used to be a lot like that

back in the Pipeline boom days in the late '70s, but since then our city fathers have "cleaned up" the area so that it's more tourist friendly. Back then there used to be a bar down there called "The Wild Cherry" that had their almost nude dancers performing right in the window every night and the hookers were EVERYWHERE. That's when the pipeline workers used to come in from their two weeks out on the job with their pockets full of thousands of dollars of cash and nothing better to do than spend it on whiskey and wild women. I kind of miss those "wild west" days. Now the "business" has gone a bit more underground.

24. I think ours is a permanent fixture.

It is only a block away from the BCP headquarters. And the cops will pick up the hookers, and raid the clubs where they think prostitution is going on, but there is no movement to get rid of the area.

To find and shoot something that's sexual expression without crossing any lines that would get the contest thread deleted from the lounge.

And if you read my thread, "DU Photographers, I Need a Hand," that's something that fits right in. Sort of.
