edge detect
make a duplicate layer, desaturate, detect edge, invert colors, then adjust opacity. Within each filter there are different modes and adjustments. Play with them to get the effect you want.

2. Part is being familiar with the photo app you use. Find an image, make
a copy, go crazy trying filters and effects. That's how I learned my way around Photoshop. Now I don't have PS so I am using GIMP. I can apply some of what I learned in PS, but it will take a while to get it right.

Just look at your app to see if you can find the filters I mentioned.

3. Very cool
Much more nuanced that just running the filter on the background layer itself. The transparency factor really makes the effect breathe. Nice work.

6. Go into your photo editing program and start experimenting.
Look at what pull down menus do for different filters and effects. Add layers and apply the filters and play with opacity or if your app allows for fading, see what fading does.

I am all for using the best learning tool in our arsenal: play.
