A recommended clarification of contest rules...
For as long as I've been around here, the unspoken rule was that you could only enter a photo in one contest. (There was one exception to that -- the September 2005 "Reflections" contest hosted by RagingInMiams -- but, in that case, the host made it clear when announcing the topic that he was changing the rules for that one contest, because the previous topic, "Water," was so similar. And, even then, no one took advantage of that rule change; all images submitted were new work.)

In any event, this issue came up again this month. First off, I apologize to ET Awful, since computer problems prevented me from logging on here for a day or so, and I thus missed his follow-up question when I raised this issue in his poll thread, and wrongly assumed the matter had already been settled. Nonetheless, it doesn't strike me as fair to allow a prior contest entry (particularly one that made the finals the first time it was entered) to be used a second time in a monthly contest. But I thoroughly agree that this rule should be made explicit in the future. Since we have several different types of contests now -- monthly, seasonal, and (possibly) calendar --it seems to me that the following rule would be a good one to include in the initial entry post:

A photograph may normally be entered only once in a certain contest type (monthly, seasonal, etc.). It can, however, be entered once in each different contest type. For certain contests (such as those to select photos for a DU calendar), the host may allow members to submit the same photograph more than once. However, any such exceptions must be announced by the host in the initial call for submissions.

What does everybody think? Can you see a better way to do this? Or do you think members should simply be allowed to resubmit the same photos without limit?

1. Sounds fair...encourages new work...
what system do you suggest for keeping track...everyone responsible for their own, or some kind of tagging?

I don't enter the contests much, but this sounds reasonable.

2. Maybe if it's already been a top #3
You can't enter it again. Otherwise the rules about subject matter seem to be fair. It would get pretty boring pretty fast if you guys submitted the same photos over and over.

3. What about: One resubmission allowed if it hasn't already won a contest
I can't see anyone actually submitting the same photo a 3rd time. Well, maybe me.

ET's Reflections is a stunner, and might just win this contest. I love the substitution even more, but I think Reflections just picks up the contest theme and shakes it like a dog.

At the least, I think it should be allowed this time, in light of the unspoken nature of the rule. If everyone decides it should continue to be a rule, it should be part of the posted rules going forward, IMO.

Jeff, I have recycled my shots on this forum so many times that whole threads have died from sheer boredom!

6. As much as I would have liked to give "Reflections" a pass this time...
...I didn't think it would be fair to the other entrants, all of whom submitted new images. What if one of more of them had a photo they would have preferred to enter, but didn't, because it had been used in a prior contest? If I had allowed such an exception for one person, I really would have had to hold the contest open for another few days, to let anyone else who had submitted a chance to change their entry to a photo they had submitted before, too.

Besides, I can't help but notice that ET's replacement entry isn't doing too shabby in early voting... ;-)

7. I think I'm going to have to turn this into a poll...
...so, if anyone has another approach than the ones that have been mentioned above, please suggest it now.
