Comment Thread for The December Contest

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

1. Gee, my photo came in huge
Let me know If I need to resize it. I try to save everything at the contest size, but I don't know about this one.

Thanks.

2. File size is well under the limit
But your pixel dimensions are over.

And BTW, that's a great pic. The lighting is superb.

3. Thanks.
Can't take credit for the lighting. It's called right time, right place... with camera.

I think this size confusion comes from the quality of compression for jpegs, for which I still haven't figured an answer.

6. Thanks to those who responded to helping me choose
I went ahead and went with the reindeer photo. While looking at the pics again this morning on an empty stomach, it dawned on me that food can be a real issue, and the gingers could give over to a bad taste for some. I know it did me with only coffee in my tummy.

Thanks again for the wonderful support and input! This is such a great group :loveya:

8. Thank you! I wasn't going to submit
anything being in the bah humbug mode in So. TX where there's not much Christmassy going on around here other than a blooming X-mas cactus, but then remembered this fella from last year.
I love cardinals, too, and I don't see them often around here; have yet to spot one so far this year.

10. Do I need to reduce the size of my entry?
I sized the pixel dimensions to 724w x 779h before submitting it. The resolution is set at 98 pixels per inch.

Here is is at 550w x 591h and 74 pixels per inch

Am thinking I like this size better, or should I go with a size more in between around 600 x 600+ ?

Comments?

11. 98 ppi is overkill for most monitors
but you should leave your submission as is IMVHO. It's well under the file size limit, and it's gorgeous. Let people see it as big as possible.

I struggled with what to call it, but all of a sudden the name is upon me!

I'd like to rename it "A Ghost of Christmas Past."

19. Piece of cake, posting photos and polls.
1. Open a word document. Write all the entry titles.

2. Go to the submission thread.

3. Right click on any photo.

4. Click on "Properties."

5. Transcribe the "Address (URL)" into your Word document under the appropriate title.
(Unfortunately, you can't cut and past from the pop up box. :( )

6. Repeat as necessary with each photo.

7. Cut and paste into the DU poll post.

8. Write titles of photos into poll options.

9. Post poll and relax... until the finals.

*Helpful Hint*
Preview is your friend when posting photo contests! It's SOOO easy to transcribe those URLs wrong!!

27. Please note that this will only work with IE...
Although I prefer Firefox, using steps 3 and 4 with it will only give you the directory path to the image without the image name itself. If you're using Firefox, you have three options.

1) Get the path as noted above, then get the image name by clicking on "Save Image..." and copy the name from the file dialog.

2) Be a manly man -- view the page source, and extract the data from the HTML code. ;-)

3) Load the page in IE instead.

Guess which is easiest. For extra credit, guess which method I use.

30. With Firefox
right-clicking on an image brings up several options. One of them is "Copy image location" which will copy that image URL to the clipboard. (It is possible that this option only appears if certain extensions are installed - the only one I use that might be involved is Image Zoom, which is quite useful.) Then just paste it where you want the image to appear. When I had this task I used Notepad as a text editor, copied and pasted the name, then the image URL, and then copied that file to the DU editor and used preview to find out how it looked.

35. I stand corrected...
Actually, it turns out that Firefox does include the entire name, but every time I've checked, it ran off the side of the dialog, so it looked like just the path. Resizing the dialog box gives the entire name, just like IE.

:dunce:

37. Hey...
Are you questioning my (and my daughter's) gender? (2) Be a manly man -- view the page source, and extract the data from the HTML code.)

Both of us regularly view (and write) source code - and last time I checked neither of us were either particularly "manly" or a "man."

(And - since playfulness doesn't always come through in electronic format - I'm just messing with you.)

FWIW, Firefox makes it pretty easy, even without scouring the source code for URL. You can replace steps 4 and 5 by right clicking on the image, selecting "view image," and copying the resulting URL from the address line into your Word document.

38. You can delete the photo from your Photobucket album
Then upload the new one, but make sure it has exactly the same filename as the existing one and that it goes into the same album (in case you have more than one). If it doesn't, your link will be broken.
