1. The quality of the final 10 is really remarkable.
Good job with the contest, blueraven95. You too, regnaD kciN.

The last monthly contest prelims netted 125, 128 and 125 votes for the respective rounds in the Lounge. The fall prelim threads garnered 232 and 236 votes in GD. More eyeballs, more opinions, more exposure for everyone. This is a very good thing.

5. YES!!!
You deserve a lot of credit -- not just for asking, but for thinking of it in the first place. :applause: :yourock:

3. Thank you for doing this. :-) Question though... there's a ? about
my photo, if it's been retouched or the leaves drawn it. Since it's probably not cool if I respond would someone please let them know that other then very lightly adjusting the contrast it's just the way it came out with the flash bouncing off the leaves.... thanks if so. B-) I don't know how to do the fancy stuff... I just happened to see this glorious sunrise one morning and take some pictures of it (you should see the one sans the flash... I actually prefer it but it has no Autumn leaf color at all). :)

With all the wonderful leaf pictures doing so well I'm thinking I should have used one of the other decent Autumn pictures I have with more leaf color... but noooo I wanted to be a bit different. :silly: Ah well... maybe next year eh? :)

4. I don't see why that's a problem...

Fill-flash is a completely legitimate photographic technique, and made your photo stand out. If some of the non-photo group members find out about it through your image, so much the better.

6. Thanks... heck I didn't know I had done that until you told me that's what I did. :-)
I just didn't want someone to think I had photoshopped/drawn the leaves in. It was good to see that it's been explained a bit in the contest thread... if it helps teach someone else something new then it's all good. :)

9. No, it's when you use a flash not so much to illuminate the subject
but to "fill in" shadows or other dark spots. Like when taking portraits outside during the day, it can fill in hard shadows on faces. Usually requires an SLR camera or separate flash unit where you can adjust the flash's output while leaving the camera's exposure unchanged.

10. Oh you mean when the flash goes off automatically
because the ownee is too dense to read the manual (yet) :hi: LOL. That ownee would be me.

11. "Getting Lucky" is one of the best ways to get a good pic
I was inside a cut-out cavern behind a waterfall (very dark) when another hiker came by. I ran back to the camera which was set up on a tripod for some more orthodox photos, repositioned it to frame the subject and started the (ASA 50) long exposure, then kicked the tripod and re-set it. A total fuck-up. But -->

14. "Fill Flash" with the Canon 20D .........
Using the "Pop-Up" Flash. I can try to find an example if you want to see one. Basically, in it's simplest form using the "Pop-Up" Flash you are doing what is called Forced Flash. Most digie Point & Shoot cameras are also capable of doing this.

On the Canon 20D you just push the little button with the lightening bolt symbol right above it on the front of the camera. The flash will pop up and will fire when you snap your pic. It's not quite as sophisticated as the fancy shoe mount flashes that attach to the camera but you can get many of the same benefits and effects as the fancy $300-$500 flashes.

Go outside and experiment with it. Find a subject where some of the detail is hidden in the shadows and kick on the flash. A flower in a shaded shrub... anything. Or, you can use it to just "light up" a subject making it stand out more. Let's say you're snappin' a tourist pic with someone standing next to a famous landmark thing. Kick on the flash to light up the person (you can't be too far away) and see what a difference it makes.

Give it a try.....
