Suggestions needed: I like Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture,
especially the opening melancholy strains. What should I look for next?

1. Try music by 19th century Russian composers
They all seemed to capture that feeling of melancholy

Polovtsian dances by Borodin

Moldau by Smetana

Sheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov (not quite so melancholy, but if you like Rimsky-Korsakov, one of his most popular works)

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto #2

And for a little home grown melancholy, try New World Symphony by Dvorak (written at and inspired by Spillville, Iowa).

2. "Dawn on the Moscow River" by Mussorgsky
from the opera Khovanshchina.

"Marche Slave" by Tchaikovsky.
