honey taste test
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 09:07 PM by undergroundpanther
For all of you guys who know I had a throat operation,a tonsillectomy and UPPP done and it knocked out my ability to taste sweet (hopefully not forever.) .Since I was having such a rotten day yesterday to try to make myself feel better and to give myself something to do so I wouldn't kill myself or something I did a taste test.

Here are the results of what sweet things you eat everyday taste like without the sweet.
Honeys:
Clover Honey:
Wax and a subtle horehound like taste.
Wildflower Honey:
tastes like flowers smell, faintly though,It's like I smell it more than taste it,may be the volatile oils. and wax.
Fall-flower Honey:
waxy and a more subtle horehound taste than the clover and this strange smarmy taste( Kinda like baking soda?) I cannot describe that is rather icky..

Spices:
Cinnamon, bitter but not like cinnamon at all .Tastes like sawdust and bitter sap.
Clove : Wow it tastes like CLOVE!! Tastes like Normal!!
Nutmeg: tasteless grit.

Other:
Chocolate: Beyond nasty do not go there again.
Kozy Shack Vanilla cherry pudding cup: Ghastly smarmy taste could make me gag if I kept eating it.
Kozy Shack Chocolate,Bitter with the taste of crisco combined. Not good.
Kozy Shack Tapioca: Tasteless with lumps. Disappointing not worth eating, texture is kinda gross when you cannot taste anything,I think I noticed the gross texture more when I can't taste the sweet and vanilla..to distract me.
Guava yogurt: Can taste something and it is not guava yogurt proper but this does not taste bad I can deal with it.
Other flavors of yogurt in cups: most flavors are tasteless or subtly taste fruity or something?? To be honest..I can't really tell if am I eating yogurt or mayonnaise.. I can only tell it's yogurt because of the label frankly.
Grape juice, matter of fact any juice, bitter, just varying intensities of bitter, some a hint of sour too. Does NOT taste like fruit.
Fresh ripe Bartlett Pears: A bit of taste in the peel that is pear like. Like a volatile compound of pear, not like a pear proper, more like the essence of a pear, the oils from pear skin that flavorers would extract than dilute and mix with chemicals to fake the taste of pear in artifical flavorings.Tasteless watery.Blah.
Mayonnaise : Hmmm that tastes like the yogurt did, just more greasy. There IS a difference in textures.. But in taste but not much..scary...
Sweet fresh Black Cherries:
A hint of cherry that is recognized as cherry but no sweetness,it is watery.
Cantaloupe: Bitter and Sour but mildly so,Watery.Slight after taste like raw pumpkin cucumber undertones, kinda icky but not repulsive.Smells WAY better than it tastes.
Brown Rice: Tasteless.
Potato: Tasteless.
Butter: more salt taste than anything.
Black eyed peas: Tastes like black eye peas BUT the taste is faint.
Cheese: mostly tasteless.
Ramen noodles Oriental favor,Salty and I get the oriental broth taste but the intensity is reduced.
Eggs: tasteless.
Broccoli Cheese soup: Nasty.
Broccoli :Nasty, Don't go there again.
Peas: tasteless,like squishing them.

My moms birthday party food:
Crab cake, almost tasteless,a bit of salty.Really kinda upsetting because I adore crabcakes.(It's a Maryland thang)
Baked Ziti, tasteless kinda smarmy.1 small Portion was enough.
My moms birthday cake, It was a yellow cake with coconut creme cheese icing:
The cake part ,tasted damn close to cornbread made without sugar.
The Coconut icing tasted like chewy crisco with a wisp of what may or may not be coconut, but like coconut milk not the wonderful taste of coconut more the bitter essence again...Blarg.
A Coffee Colatta from FuckinGoNuts..Bitter but delightfully cold felt good going down my raw throat ,whipped creme on top was tasteless but I liked the texture. Only drank some of it.
A Passion fruit flavored snowball: ice and a strange taste not bad,but not passion fruit,or fruit like at all.Have no clue how to describe it.
Arizona Iced Tea: Do NOT go there again. IckKKK Shudder!spit,spit,sppppiiiittt...tt . I Grab paper towel and wipe off my tounge.yikes.. Dump it down the sink, and throw bottle A-WAY..
Water: WOW it tastes like normal WATER woohoo!
(water is great for washing away all these shitty tastes from my halfassed palate...)

There you have it..

This is what food has tasted like since July 24th for me.
I hope I get my taste buds back someday and soon.
On the good side I've lost a respectable amount of weight!
It's not like I look forward to eating anything these days is why I think.

1. Thank you. That's really interesting.
Have you tried things that are normally savory, like tomatoes and herb breads? Are you vegetarian, or have you tried some softer meats?

I hope you get your sense of taste back soon; this has got to be frustrating. But I'm glad you no longer have your tonsils and I hope that not having them will help your general health and sense of wellbeing.

5. That's interesting.
It's cool to pay attention enough to be write it down. It's easy to miss opportunities like that.
