2. Mass, believe it or not this is sort of progress.

Joan Vennochi 9/25/05

"Democratic senators who are in the presidential contender mix, such as Clinton, Kerry, and Joseph Biden of Delaware, have yet to label their votes to authorize war a mistake, even though the underlying rationale weapons of mass destruction was long ago revealed as false. Given the reluctance to admit mistakes in Washington, they probably never will. These Democrats, meanwhile, continue to tailor their opposition to the way the war is being waged, not to its underlying purpose or morality.

A Biden opinion piece, published recently in The Washington Post, addressed the Bush administration's "mishandling of Iraq." Biden called not for troop withdrawal, but for the Bush administration to provide "a much clearer picture of the way forward." Biden also called for "monthly oversight meetings with senior administration witnesses to assess Iraq's progress." If that is as brave as a Democratic presidental contender gets, 2,000 US military dead are just a starting point.

Yet when it came to approving a Bush nominee to the Supreme Court, Biden dared not take a chance with Roberts. Kerry, too, opposes Roberts on grounds of high moral principle, but can't muster the same outrage about Iraq, which he recently called "a low-grade civil war."
****************************

So, is it 'too cautious' this week? Or is it 'too out of the mainstream'? Or is it 'willing to to do anything for vote'? Sigh, the Glob will never be satisfied.

3. Well the last frame is actually spin, but
they've actually confirmed that Kerry is right in what he says (otherwise they wouldn't be linking it to good polling).

5. It does fly in the face of their reporting on the speech
itself. That cartoon is offensive precisely because they did get that this was an intensely personal speech by Kerry tieing his past to his present. They've also commented for years that Kerry is at least somewhat reserved. If this was simply responding to poll numbers, he could have written a far less personal, eloquent, and heart felt speech - he could have written a barn burner just on dissent, ignoring all the history of MA and the nation. He also wouldn't have written the email as he did to invite people and his family wouldn't have been there in force.

Also, low poll numbers for Bush do not equate to accepting dissent. Dissent is risky when you want to lead the country, but now, you can't really lead unless you dissent. America does not have a tradition of picking a leading critic from the opposition to lead. Mentally going over the elections since 1960, the only nominee who was a leading critic was McGovern. The only one who comes close other than that is Reagan, who was a critic (possibly a leading proponent of conservative thought).

6. Excellent points. The irony is that
whether or not it's popular, dissent is American.

7. But it's kind of insulting to voters.
JK SHOULD poll well when he's doing and saying the right things. Voters, thankfully, are not as cynical as journalists.
