66. Was that the 12 year who was running for Congress?
Once again, I have shoes older than this guy. The other guy, Mr. Hodes, went by outside just as I was calling him something nice (like a polished speaker) and stopped me and shook my hand. Thank Gawd I wasn't saying something bad. New Hamshire people really pay attention to what you say about them.

16. Dean's radio address was good
But they always sound so scripted. Not just Howard's.

They should read them to someone (if they don't already do that). It would make the address sound more conversational. The words were great. The style needs something.

So I think a lot of people hear them. Maybe Randy Rhodes or Big Ed could give them some radio tips. Howard sounded OK, just like he was reading. I liked what he had to say.
It's not just us, either. Of course, the chimp sounds awful on or off the radio.

How long does it take those NH people to eat, anyway? Sheesh.

41. A few more points (I just finished watching it taped)
His Iraq point:

"Bring our troops home from a stable Iraq "

Second extremely important point:

I believe he said he was giving cookies up for Lent. That makes sense. He said he chickened out last year -- given he was running for prez, he certainly couldn't give up that vital fuel.

Last point:

My favorite parts of the speech were when he talked with such affection about New Hampshire and when he made the funny joke about Ted Kennedy, which I'm sure made that first Congressional candidate feel better about his error. Very gracious of JK.

Very last point:

I kind of know what Tay Tay and DD look like, and I didn't see them as far as I could tell.

Overall, great speech, and incredible how much "love" there was in the room.

44. Bringing the troops home
is key to his plan to stabilize Iraq, however. Key difference between him and Bush. He sees our presence as fueling the insurgency, Bush doesn't.

46. But do you know which comes first?
Troops gone or stability? Because stability will not happen for a LONG time. It's only getting worse there. But don't think I'm picking on JK here; we had a discussion about Iraq yesterday in this forum, and I'm of the opinion that no matter what we do there will be an inevitable continuation of violence. Just was wondering what your take on the order of how JK would do things.

48. 20,000 Home for the Holidays
His letter telling Bush he needed to say unequivically that there would be no permanent bases in Iraq. I think he has made his point quite clear, we have to start bringing troops home to show them we mean to do it. That would begin to take the steam out of the insurgency leaving only the 5% or so who are actual terrorists, which the Iraqis should be able to handle themselves. It is a rolling plan, turning the country over sector by sector, remember? It also takes the blame away from the troops and forces the people to start working towards their own security, turning in insurgents and the like.

The main point though, is that he clearly wants the war to end as fast as possible and is not part of the PNAC global warmongering plan the way alot of the leftists try to paint him.

51. Thanks for the reminder of the points to his plan, Sandnsea
I was going to discuss it a little more than realized I am just exhausted with the subject of Iraq, and need a break from it. I guess the point of my first post was to reiterate that Kerry's plan is NOT Murtha's or the anti-war Left's plans of troops out regardless of what is happening on the ground. It's a more flexible plan than that, but it certainly won't satisfy the purists around here or Kos.

52. Not that big a difference
I honestly don't think that if some sort of genocide were going on in Iraq that Murtha wouldn't support troops going into stop it. So I honestly don't think his plan is really an out at any cost plan either, regardless of what he says. I think they are pretty close together actually, and that it's more the Biden/Hillary/Joe bunch that is afraid to stand up for a phased withdrawal strategy.

50. Kerry has always maintained
Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 10:03 PM by ProSense
that American troop presence is fueling the insurgency and that withdrawing troops will allow more Iraqis to take up their own defense. Stability is the aftermath to troop withdrawal, it cannot happen as long as American troops are there because they are seen as occupiers

I did something like that when I met Marvin at an event with JK several months ago. My husband took a picture of me reaching to shake Marv's hand, but since he's VERY tall and I'm VERY short, it looks like I was reaching for something other than his hand! i made my husband photo shop the picture from the waist up before I showed anyone!

81. he's gotten very good at speaking directly,
and not like a Senator giving a floor speech, at these kind of events. I'd say he now rivals somebody like Dean for plain, direct speaking--and this can't help but be good for him politically. He used to have the tendency to ramble on too long about a particular subject--but he was good tonight. The jokes at the beginning, too. He is right when he says he's changed.

Agree about the tie--but it looks good anyway. Not everyone puts him under the microscope like we do around here!

62. It was fantastic! We were at the sponsor's reception with Senator Kerry
before the dinner and that's where we had our pictures taken with him. Yes, I did get my picture taken with our favorite senator. My camera didn't work but a photographer gave me his card and told me he got a couple of good ones. I hope they came out nice.

I told Senator Kerry that I wanted a photo so I could torture the Repugs I work with, one in particular who still displays a large Bush sign over her desk. The senator told me to "Go get em " and gave me a squeeze. He is really strong. Hope the pic comes out good. At least I know my hand wasn't anywhere it shouldn't have been. ::raises an eyebrow at TayTay::

Gee TayTay...did you really have your hand on the Senator's...

Oh and then there was my favorite candidate for Congress: Paul Hodes. He came by our table and introduced himself. His speech was very good. I really like this guy. He just might make it this time. He tried unsuccessfully in 2004, but like a certain other individual we know, he got tougher after defeat. I hope he wins this time. After the event we were all standing outside and I asked TayTay if she liked him and she said something complementary (except she referred to him as the er, older man). Mr. Hodes just happened to walk by at that moment and he heard us discussing him, so he stopped to say "hello." Good thing we were saying good things about him.

I loved Senator Kerry's speech. He always seems so relaxed when he's in NH. New Hampshire loves John Kerry and I think it is mutual. He got a lot of cheers about supporting NH's First in the Nation Primary. He does seem to belong in NH. Maybe he'll retire here after his eight years in the White House. :)

It was good to see LevensonK and TayTay and their better halves. Ladies, we have to do this more often!

You have Senator envy!!!!!!!!!

You cannot have my Senator. Hands off woman. Mitt Romney is going to retire to New Hampshire. Sen. KErry is not going to retire, he is going to continue to serve the good people of Massachusetts (at least the ones who aren't snarky little bastids) until something better comes around.

Retire to New Hampster. No friggin way.

72. The dinner was okay, not great. The chicken was dry, but Senator Kerry
wasn't so I was happy! Desert was really good: cheesecake.

Senator Kerry seemed very happy and relaxed and it was good to see Del Sandusky there too. I remember reading about Del's depression and how Senator Kerry was there for him during that time. Guess he's keeping his buddy close by these days. That says a lot for the man.

pol and it wouldn't be fair to ask her to keep the same grueling schedule that the senator does.

Tonight perhaps wasn't it, but it was so nice to see her hubby, he seemed relaxed to me, and he was so dang John Kerry, eloquent!

76. You're right, but I wasn't
asking for that reason. I saw this in the following article:

Accompanied by his wife Theresa Heinz, Kerry also appeared with state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark of Portsmouth in Hampton and with state Sen. Maggie Hassan of Exeter in Newmarket.

wanted to avoid being on C-SPAN. I'm happy to hear she was at the earlier events though. It makes me think 2008.

74. Article
He singled out the planned deal to allow a Dubai company to run six U.S. port terminals as the latest example of the administration's reliance on secrecy, avoiding the law and "cluelessness at the top."

"Neither the president nor the secretary of homeland security knew about the deal until after it went public," he said. "If that sounds familiar, it should from an administration whose most important disaster management officials had to watch television to learn what was happening down in the Gulf Coast."

Referring to former federal disaster chief Michael Brown, Kerry said: "You know you have a problem when all of a sudden Brownie looks like the competent member of this administration."

82. I wonder why he still pointedly attacks the WH
when * won't run anymore? I suppose it's because as * goes, so goes the whole repub party. And as a former presidential candidate he's uniquely qualified to criticize. I guess. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed every second of it--was just wondering what the strategy is.

84. it has to do with the 2006 elections also
Bush will still be in power. Democrats can make the case that we need someone who will oppose him unlike the Republicans who support him no matter what.

it's also important for people to remember the incompetence. the whole Clinton was offered Bin Laden on a silver platter and other lies hurt Kerry also. people didn't just view it as isolated to Clinton, but a Dem thing.

so yeah, i think it's probably a thing of as Bush goes, so goes the whole Republican party.

it will be interesting to see the change from focus on Bush to the Republicans who decide to run in 2008. of course it doesn't have to be an either/or thing. they can do both.

85. He's said before
that the president sets the tone for the way the government runs. I think he phrases things the way does because for him, the problem is the administration, and also because of what you said - he's already offered himself up as a better alternative.

88. Curiously enough, I think he is beginning to pivot away from *

and to attacking the 109th (Weasel) Congress. The case has been made that this Admin is inept and incompetent. The mere mention of Brownie's name is now good for a laugh from a crowd. You can use shorthad like 'the Katrina Administration' precisely because you don't have to spend a whole lot of time explaining what you mean. The case has been made and the case has, to a large extent, been accepted by the people. (The media is another case, but the people do understand this.)

I thought I detected a change in the Senator's speech last night. I really thought he was starting to go after the Rethug Congress and to start to make the charges of incompetence and arrogance stick to them. (As it should. Didn't Senator Kerry call them Bush's enablers at one point? They are also guilty of the Terry Schiavo disaster and the late-night roll call votes that screw the people and favor special interests and so forth.) I can see Sen. Kerry making less and less specific mentions of this Admin as time goes on and beginning to focus in on the Republican Party and the sycophants in that party that refuse to challenge a leadership that is hellbent on spending us into bankruptcy so that they can reward their friends in big business.

Curiously enough, I wonder how this approach will evolve as it becomes clearer that Sn. McCain is trying to run for Pres by having it both ways. McCain is trying to be the 'maverick Senator' to the idiot media while being a butt-kisser for the RW side of the Rethug Party. That is going to be an interesting dynamic to attack, both in 2006 and in 2008. Considering the history here, that is going to be very, very interesting indeed. (There are signs here for how it will go, which are fascinating.)

89. Well, I heard a change that I really did NOT like.
I swear to God I heard him say 'idea'. Without the 'r'. I hope I was mistaken.

I can't see McCain getting the nom.
Too close to bush*.
Too old.
Too mean. (Chelsea, Obama)
Cheated on his first wife with second wife and others.
Racist remarks ("I will always hate gooks").
They would have to retract the smear from 2000.
Ports.
Iraq.
Chas Keating.
Birthday cake when Katrina was hitting the gulf.
So much more...

We could take him down.

91. Don't worry. The 'ideer' will, ah, reappeah!
From The Wicked Good Guide to Boston English: http://www.boston-online.com/wickedpr.html

Don't worry about poor lost New England R's, however. In typical Yankee fashion, we re-use 'em - by sticking them on the ends of certain other words ending with "uh" sounds: "Ah final ahs just disappeah, but wheah they go we've no idear."

But wait, it gets more complex. As seasoned Boston English speakah Alan Miles has gently tried to pound into a poor Nooyawka's thick head, that missing R only reappears when the word is followed by another word that starts with a vowel, for example: "I have no idear if the movie begins at nine or ten," but, "Does the movie begin at 9 or 10? I have no idea." Hey, just like French! ...

Jonathan E. Dyer notes this rule is nullified for certain words ending in "ure" such as "rapsha" (extreme joy) and "capsha" (what you do with a flag).

So, not to worry. The Senator's ideers will come back, I promise you!

And I so agree, McCain is vulnerable. It's just too early to go after him yet.

I thought it was just me. I don't mind the change, maybe it comes from listening to so many people across the country.
