Completely off topic. Post about shoes.
There is currently a post about Laura Bush wearing what appear to be Manolo Blaniks and several posters have been critical of her for it. I pointed out I was pleased to see her in something fashionable rather than "frumpy" Some are boasting how they wear only Birkenstock's or clogs, never heels. I also mentioned Nancy Pelosi and her fabulous Manolo's. I want to know where it is written that liberals can't be fashionable or pretty? It seems to me that I have seen many posts belittling those who like to dress well and enjoy pretty things.
Apparently some think it is necessary to be a birkenstock hemp wearing hippie in order to be a liberal. Well, guess what? I love clothes and getting my nails done ( not that I can afford it anymore!)and yes I do wear heels. And I am as liberal as it gets! And I wish I had Nancy's shoes! Sorry .Just had to vent! Things have been so serious lately!:bounce:

1. I agree with you
I see nothing wrong with anyone spending their own money to buy whatever clothes/shoes they want. There is really nothing sacred about Birkenstocks. For a formal state occasion, Birkenstocks might actually be out of place - just as a ski parka (Dick + Lynne) is an insult at a memorial service.

Without looking, I assume that Alex, Vanessa and Teresa all have lovely shoes to go with the nice outfits they wear. There was a thread yesterday showing Laura and Condi in Africa. Barbara joined them in a skin tight knit dress - that really looked out of place (and trashy) for a state occasion.
I was in fact tempted to try to find the photo of Vanessa with her dad in Paris from last year and the one of Alex with her dad last month going to Jann Werner's birthday party. Both looked very classy and their clothes very appropriate for the 2 very different occasions.

I didn't post because what they wear is really less a problem than what is in their heads.

2. That is for sure true! I just don't see virtue in frumpiness!
But whatever turns your crank I suppose. I just don't feel it hurt the Dems a whit when we had a classy well dressed first lady like Jackie(though she may have been a bit too extravagent!);-)

3. I could name a potential first lady who would be equally classy
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 07:45 PM by karynnj
Remember that Jackie was about 30 years old when she became first lady. Teresa would easily replace Jackie as my favorite first lady. Not to mention the beautiful, intellgent first daughters and sons.

4. You don't hate us though, right?
I mean you have nothing against us ladies who dress in early American sweatshirt as a rule, right? (Hey, it has a Patriots logo on it. That means something around here bucko! I keep that one around until Spring Training, then it's Red Sox logos. I have some standards, you know.)

I have big size 9 wide feet and no arches at all to speak of. So Barry Manilow's shoes or whatever they are wouldn't fit me right. (I have flat feet wicked bad. I generaly wear gawd ugly but really comfy shoes. I have foresworn ever wearing anything with a heel ever again. NExt fundraiser I go to, they have to take me in tennis shoes or I'm not going.) And I am too a girly-girl. (I have like stretch marks and everything to prove it.) I just don't like shoes with heels on them. They really wicked hurt my feet.

7. I'd prefer not having to wear shoes at all.
One of the only advantages of growing up in the South is that you didn't have to wear shoes from May until October. (I don't think kids can get away with that today because of the growing Fire Ant problem.) Anyway, I'm like you Tay, I can't deal with the heels.

8. We can start our own commune!
Birkestock wearing, ultra chic, hippie broads for Kerry!

(I don't think it's going to fit on the bumper sticker though!)

Okay, I can take the chic part out. Even my mother would laugh at that one.

10. As long as you don't hate me! I was complaining about not being seen as a
liberal because I dress up.And I too have sneakers and a pair of hiking boots! And I frequently wear flats or sandals! So there! And I am also a Nine with little arch but my feet are narrow! (they were wide when I was in retail though!)
Hey , how about I pull together a new group? Hippie liberal Fashionistas for Kerry????????

Wherein we promise to respect each other's style (or lack of same) and agree to allow the messies to be messy and the well-groomed and fashionable to rock the world. I like it.

17. I'm an
in between person. Even the comfy group would look at me some days and say "what tha..." Howevah, when I have to dress dress, I like to do in style. (Nancy Pelosi wears some fly shoes.) So while I prefer comfy, I enjoy getting dressed up occasionally, but I can't wear the flashy 3" to 4" heels that some do. I'm in heels (that I can tolerate) almost every day for the office. Right now, my wardrobe sucks and I dream of replacing most of it.

19. Isn't that sweet?
You've got a looong time till you to get to my age, WEL. Right now, you should just enjoy being the gorgeous young woman you are.
To all you 20-somethings out there, I'll give you the same advice I give my daughter. Moisturizer is your friend. You'll thank me for that in about 20 years.
:P

14. The nice thing about liberals
is that we are as diverse as nature itself. Some of us like comfortable attire, while others feel better when they dress up. Why must we be squeezed into a mold of how a liberal ought to look and dress?
Personally, I dress like a slob at home (poor hubby has to look at that every day), but when I go out, I dress up. Of course I also like wearing heels. Unfortunately, my poor feet don't like them. I've acquired some neuromas that get quite painful if I wear fancy footwear.
Sigh...I'm always reminded of my mom's saying; 'German feet and Parisian shoes don't go well together'.

Was your mom from Germany or is this a saying in the USA too? That reminds me so my own mom who said that all the time when I was young and hurting my feet in high heels. And she said it in her funny German dialect (from the region around Frankfurt).

18. Laura being frumpy is more than just about the clothes she wears
but i agree with what you say about liberals and fashion. i don't think those who like to dress up or into fashion are any less liberal than some others.
