A New War

A Call to Service

Then back in the 70s he was co-author of The New Soldier, about Vietnam. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that!

3. Hi Ginny

You can't get a copy of it (unless you have a zillion dollars to spend on ebay, or stumble across it in some out-of-the-way used book store), but some helpful anti-Kerry zealot put the whole book up on the web here: http://johnkerrythenewsoldier.blogspot.com/

If you can ignore the large amount of editorial crap included (such as the now classic misrepresentation of the cover photo) you can read the whole book.

It's interesting that freeperville is so obsessed with Kerry as to make this available to us, his fans. I haven't read every word of it, but what I have read is fairly mainstream for the times. It's antiwar, sure, but pretty tame by the standards of the early 70's. It's also truthful.

I find it a fascinating historical document, emphasis on historical. It has little to do with the politics of today except in the sense that our country still lives in the shadows of the Vietnam war. The truth hurts.

4. thanks, whome
I will go and look at it.

I just finished reading Howard Zinn's account of the Vietnam war (in People's History of the U.S), so the timing is great for me.

As for Kerry obsessions, here at DU, seems that the Kerry threads always get tons of responses, both positive and negative. I guess that's a good thing--he still matters to people. My biggest hope is that the election fraud gets known, so that people know he's a winner, not a loser. Freeps are still reacting, cause they see the threat.

5. Another way you may get to look at it -
try your local university libraries. Often these are open to the public for browsing, even though you can't check books out, if it is on the shelf you can read it in the library.

My university has a copy so I was lucky, I got to look through it. It's very powerful. I didn't read every word, but I don't understand why it was supposedly considered "potentially damaging" to Kerry. I found it very poignant, and revealing of the high quality of character and leadership that he had even at that relatively young age. The cover photo is pretty radical though - that might be what concerns some folks, although I think it was pretty appropriate for the time and circumstances. It's really sad how much people have forgotten about how horrible the Vietnam war was; otherwise they would understand the rage and confrontation depicted in that scene.

7. Thanks
I'm mostly looking for book titles so I can see if they're at a local store like Waldens or something. :)
