Sen. Byrd praises Bush on nominee

By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
July 22, 2005

Sen. Robert C. Byrd, one of President Bush's harshest critics, has become an unlikely ally on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge John G. Roberts Jr.

"I said to him, 'I am shouting your name from the steeple tops for reaching out, reaching across the aisle,'?" the West Virginia Democrat reported after taking a phone call from Mr. Bush to discuss a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

After Mr. Bush nominated federal Judge Roberts this week, Mr. Byrd again issued a statement praising the president. "I thank President Bush for reaching out to senators on both sides of the aisle as he worked to select a nominee for the court," Mr. Byrd said. "I hope that this bipartisan cooperation will continue as the confirmation process begins."

"One's life is probably in no greater danger in the jungles of deepest Africa than in the jungles of America's large cities," he writes. "In my judgment, much of the problem has been brought about by the mollycoddling of criminals by some of the liberal judges who have been placed on the nation's courts in recent years."

3. Its not a surprise at all
He with the exception of Rice and Gonzales has supported most of Bush's nominees, including Ashcroft 4 years back.

2. Youre surprised?
Byrd voted to confirm Janice Rogers Brown. Second of all, I dont trust the Washington Times. Third of all, Byrd is a conservative democrat, and contrary to what it may seem like, he is the more conservative of him and Rockefeller even on economic issues where you would think Byrd would be the more liberal being brought up poor and Rockefeller being well you know. Byrd should be saying something like we should ask questions of Roberts.

4. Why are you surprised
Byrd is a social conservative who is liked on GDP for reasons I do not understand (short of people who think that anybody who voted against IWR is a liberal).

"ANY" Dem who would praise this kind of nomination and Bush when he knows the consequences for us as a Party and a nation.

7. He's got an election coming up,right?
Maybe "liberal judges" and "mollycoddling criminals" are big issues in WV. It's a shame. It's also why I say the only solution for the south is a southern grown one. They're never going to change unless southern Dems start telling them why they need to.

8. Yeah but hes beloved there
and the man who freed Willie Horton won WV, no joke Dukakis won WV. I think its because he really may believe in Roberts, remember he did vote to confirm Janice Rogers Brown and Ashcroft. I am not gonna eat him up until I learn more but I Am not surprised is all.

9. Yeah he is
But I know here there are things our people can get away with voting on, things that just don't hit the local radar screen, and things that would be BIG NEWS. I don't know, but I'm guessing judges would be big news in WV. The liberal judges mollycoddling line, we sure didn't need that under any circumstance. When are we going to have someone stand up and say it's common sense to not put a pot smoker in prison.
