Considering that Kerry talked Obama into opting out of public financing ....

He needs help. Obama only raised $8 million more than McCain in June. I feel like this is a bit on Kerry, too, because he encouraged Obama not to opt into public financing. Given that, I hope his supporters donate as well as Obama's vast small donor network.

I gave $100 today. Who's with me?

2. I will - I suspect that June may just be a lull caused by the primaries ending
I agree that Kerry was clearly one of the people encouraging Obama to opt out and I think that we should contribute as you did.

The dilemma is that without opting out, he would be at a significant disadvantage. It is because of what Senator Bradley wrote when he called for inverting the pryamid. His thesis is that the Republican candidate steps onto the top of an existing pyramid - with think tanks and "their" media forming the base. The Dmocrat starts with himself and is tasked to build a complex structture.

McCain will be able to depend that by September all the RW talking heads (many of whom don't like him) will be an echo chamber like they were in 2004 constantly eching every new anti-Obama theme. Right now this is most of talk radio and a significant amount of cable. This is ALL free for McCain and there is no comparable Democratic network. Throw in that the MSM has always adored McCain. Can you imagine the media chatter had Obama made McCain's repeated and major gaffes on Iraq? McCain has actually made more gaffes than Bush did - because Bush was in a very tight bubble.

Equal dollars leads to an uneven playing field as it did in 2004.

4. Yes, the Democratic network has amounted lately to hand wringers and whiners.

I mean, if Republicans can stomach McCain, who nearly became a Democrat, I think Dems can deal with a couple votes or positions they don't like. Obama is far more with the Dem base than McCain ever will with the GOP base.

5. If we can spare a bit for the DNC, that would be helpful also
The reason I didn't send $100 to Obama is that I split my money evenly between the Obama campaign and the DNC, sending $50 to each. Dean's 50 state strategy has helped bring us a long way, and the DNC is short on cash right now. So if folks have a little spare change rattling arond after they give to Obama, send it to the DNC.

6. Good point. They're next on my list. But why aren't big donors
giving more to the DNC?

7. Ah, the Obama camp doesn't release or leak fundraising numbers
I would not put total faith into those numbers they reported. They did not, after all, come from the Obama folks.

8. Yeah, I saw that later. Still, it was a good time to donate for me.
So if a false news report did the trick, so be it.

9. i think the big reason for opting out of public financing wasn't about the money
whether or not they have enough, but more about the time they would have to spend it. Kerry taking public funds in 2004 limited how much and when he could spend.

i wouldn't worry about this too much.
