Bill Maher gets it right about John Kerry
Very funny (and sad) new rule from Bill Maher. Very pro-Kerry words coming from Maher. He's always a bit behind the learning curve. (It took 4 years for him to realize that voting for Ralph Nader in 2000 was a bad idea.) Better late than never. Very funny commentary if you read the whole thing.

New Rule: There's more to being smart than just not misspeaking. The world is a complicated place. Sometimes it all feels like a runaway train of violence, resentment and insecurity - sort of like a family reunion at Ryan O'Neil's place. Which is why for this next election, we need to pick the smartest candidate, not the dullest one who simply never had a verbal gaffe and said a wrong word or phrase.

snip

The guy who had the right answer on terrorism in 2004 was John Kerry - he said fighting terrorism was primarily an intelligence and law enforcement operation, which doesn't sound macho in elections, but is true

, he can't be in the debate either, because he's a crappy comedian. He screwed up a joke - about our troops! Hit the road jack.

snip

The sad thing is, all of those could really work. Does John Kerry really think the troops are stupid? No, Karl Rove things you're stupid. And if a botched joke or a sigh or a brain-fart is enough to derail you from a wise choice, he's kinda right.

3. Not a Maher fan, but kudos to him for this piece -- "gaffe gotcha"
He really expressed some of my frustrations so well.

5. 2004 was the first mass internet echo chamber.
The so-called liberal were as bad, if not worse than the direct mail, spinmachine, for believing such nonsense. The netroot journalism crowd yelling loudly to build a fan base, way off the facts, and the anti-war crowd always yelling loudly anti-war, trying to win over the country too scared sh..less and pro-this war to listen.

6. Don't get too excited about Maher
Maher also repeats some of the typical anti-Kerry comments, both on the show and in his Salon interview. I had to do some editing to get the gist of what I wanted in the interview while keeping out the anti-Kerry stuff:

http://liberalvaluesblog.com/?p=1082

Among the other stuff in the interview:

Yes, you'd think they would have learned that lesson by now. You'd think they would have learned how to win a national election. But they keep making the same mistakes over and over. John Kerry ran pretty much the same campaign that Al Gore did in 2000, which said to the American people, "Look, I'm not going to really outline how different I am from this guy, because I'm afraid there are some things about his positions you like. So I'll just trust that when you get into the voting booth you'll say, 'Well, the one guy is a retard. It's a no-brainer, I'll vote for the other guy.' "

Later, when speaking about Hillary:

I think she'd make a fine president. I've never been convinced that she could win a general election. I think, in many ways, she would be the worst of both worlds for the Democrats, because she is basically a centrist. So she's going to constantly be tacking to the right. She's going to constantly be trying to fish in that pond of votes that I don't think ever bears fruit for the Democrats ... You remember John Kerry in the duck-hunting outfit, Harold Ford with the Ten Commandments?

7. It was a joke
but in the end it was something like "Kerry running again would be like Rex Grossman starting another Super Bowl"

I agree with DD, better late than never.

8. But
the audience did not laugh at his joke, now that says something. Listen Maher was backing Biden's 3 regions in Iraq last night also, the audience did not agree with him on that either.
