Patrick Healy, who distinguished himself in treating the swiftboats as if they could be believed is working at discrediting a Kerry run.
It is amazing what some people can make up with little nothings.

Can John Kerry Rebound?
By Patrick Healy
Senator John Kerry Senator John Kerry
Some of Senator John Kerry’s old pals in New York aren’t exactly urging him to make a repeat run at the White House in 2008.
Team Kerry recently asked Hassan Nemazee, a major New York moneyman for Mr. Kerry’s ’04 bid, to pull together some of Mr. Kerry’s old N.Y.C. leadership team to talk about his prospects for ’08. Three invitees told me this week that they declined to go because they did not see much hope for Mr. Kerry in a possible field of Hillary, Barack, Edwards, maybe Gore, and even fresh faces like Vilsack and Bayh.
Two of these donors were obvious Hillary people, but the third was a staunchly uncommitted New York fundraiser who had helped Mr. Kerry in 2004.
...
So, let's see. Kerry wants to organize a meeting with potential donors in NY. 3 people decline. 2 are Hillary's donors already. One is not committed, but not warm for Kerry because he does not feel people are lining up behind Kerry.
Question: Was this donor a donor before or after Iowa? This is something Leahy does not tell us.

Mr. Nemazee confirmed that he was asked to gather a group for a dinner or lunch with Mr. Kerry, and that the reaction was not uniformly positive. However, he noted, the major problem was that the holidays kept people from easily agreeing on a date — and then the whole issue became moot when Mr. Kerry decided to make a trip to Iraq.
So, people were not available because of the holidays, then Kerry decided it was more urgent to go to Iraq: well, it is certainly more important for the country, for sure.
A few facts now. They had to cancel a meeting that was oversusbscribed, and they raised twice as much money as last year. Not too bad for a dead man.
A Kerry aide dismissed any notion of tepid enthusiasm about the senator’s prospects, noting that two New Yorkers, Laurie Rothenberg and John Neu, had organized a breakfast for Mr. Kerry in New York City last week that had to be canceled due to Senate votes. “It was oversubscribed,” the aide said of the breakfast.
Mr. Kerry also had his annual birthday-cum-fundraiser at his home in Boston yesterday, which raised about $300,000 (compared to $150K last year).

Also, the title acknowledges that the NYTimes considers Kerry as a serious candidate. Despite all the protests to the contrary, they continue to care if he runs or not. I do not see people writing articles and articles about Biden or Dodd, who are totally qualified to run as well (whatever I think about them).
