OT: This is just the kind of suggestion
I have come to expect from James Carville and Charlie Cook: Democrats should borrow $10 million from a bank. See the GD-P post for more information.

4. why is it a bad idea?
This election is shaping up to be a landslide win for the Democratic Party - Carville's suggestion to pour more money into the 2nd and 3rd tier races seems pretty good to me.

5. The problem is that they would spend the next 2 years raising money
Edited on Sat Oct-14-06 05:46 PM by Mass
to reimburse the debt rather than to build the party (or may be the next few months, but it is enough to lose a lot of time for nothing), while of course Hillary could use the $40 Millions that she has stocked to make sure she is the nominee.

What about Hillary giving them a part of her war chest (and I would not mind Kerry, Bayh and Edwards doing the same, proportionnally to what they have, though Kerry has raised a lot more to candidates than Hillary).

6. That's exactly the point! Why would the Democrats
Edited on Sat Oct-14-06 05:45 PM by ProSense
choose to burden themselves with such a large bank debt at this point? Besides, they are talking about going into debt for second- and third-tier races. There are a lot of big name Democrats raising money who could support the party, even make strong appeals for contributions at this point. Momentum, which is key, is on the Democrats' side! The key races will not be lost due to lack of funding. Menendez is again leading Kean.

8. I think the point is that the money is needed right now
if we make the kind of gains that seem possible (40 - 50 seats) we can raise the money with our big name Democrats after the election - and having the political power that will come with that big of a win is sure to open some pursestrings.

Yes, it's a risk, but IMO the Democratic Party needs to pour ALL of it's resources into Nov 7th... this is shaping up to be a sea change election - a once in a lifetime chance.

9. For second- and third-tier, a huge debt is unnecessary, and

not worth the risk of 2008, when other Democratic members in both houses will be up for reelection. They can raise money in many other ways. No one is arguing against putting more resources into more races, but a $10 million bank loan is a dumb idea.

10. I dont think Begala was that innocent. In the few months after the

election, Dean can only count on himself to get this money if he takes a loan. The big names will be busy increasing their war chest, largely because money is one the things that bring buzz to a candidate.

Likely scenario if this happens:

December 1 2006: Hillary gives a few millions to cover the debt, asks for Dean's head because the finances of the party are so bad, and pushes somebody who will favor her at the head of the DNC.

11. Hillary giving part of her war chest was my first thought too
especially as it was obtained almost though false pretenses. Bill's letter said she was the number 1 Republican target and other inflated statements utterly inconsistent with the fact that her opponent is a mayor of Yonkers, who no one I know ever heard of and we get NYC news.
