1. If you are going to keep it on the boat a lot
you would be better off buying a Mossberg 500 shotgun with Marinecoat on it. It will keep the gun from rusting away.

2. Maybe better off with Ruger or Beretta ...
... PC carbines. They are not any more rust resistant, but the word on the street is that they are more reliable. 15 rd. magazines for the Ruger model can be had from after-market sources. Both carbines use the same magazines as their company's auto pistols.

For corrosion resistance, consider the stainless Ruger Mini-30 or S&W's 7-shot .357 revolver.

4. Don't get the Beretta
"Gun Tests" magazine gave it bad marks for ergonomics and sights. Says the controls were poorly placed and non-intuitive, requiring a lot of repositioning to manipulate them.

And for the price of a Beretta Cx4 you can buy a Ruger Mini-14 or Mini-30 made with stainless steel barrels and receivers and a sythetic, weatherproof stock. And a lot more "oomph" than a pistol-caliber carbine! You can also get a 40-round stainless magazine for the Mini-14. Fill it up with .223 Remington ammo loaded up with some medium-game Nosler Partition bullets and you have a good anti-personnel weapon with some penetrating power.

You can also get a stainless-steel 12-gauge as well. Pump or semi-auto, you can put out some serious buckshot with one of those puppies, and they come with shorter barrels for ease of handling.

If you want a pistol, perhaps a Ruger P89 or a Springfield Armory XD. They both have stainless steel slides, the Ruger has an aluminum frame and the XD a polymer one. And you can get aftermarket magazines with a higher-than-normal capacity. You can also get a Glock and high-capacity (32 round) magazines for it as well.

A revolver is a very reliable weapon and somewhat more ideal for long-term storage than a semiauto, and Ruger and Smith & Wesson both make stainless-steel .357 Magnums, but be preparted to reload a lot in a firefight.

Of course, if you had both a Ruger P89 and a Ruger PC9 carbine there would be an interchangability advantage because they both use the same magazines. Strap a pistol around your waist with a half-dozen spare magazines, grab the carbine, and you're ready to reload whatever runs out.

5. I would go with stainless steel.
I go with the Mossberg mariner model and a ruger mini-30 in stainless. You might want to also look at a full size rifle such as the M1 garand, you can buy AP/API rounds for the .30-06 which would be handy to disable other boats (engines and fuel tanks).

6. Don't forget shotgun flares!
They make rocket flares for 12-gauge shotguns. For distress signalling. But firing a magazine of burning magnesium onto a pirate boat should cause some confusion as they try to put the fires out before the pirate boat explodes. Then you grab the stainless/synthetic Mini-14 and keep their heads down until the fires rage out of control, then book it away from them while they abandon ship.

8. I've heard good reports about the Kel-Tec...

and they also make a rifle version, in .223 Remington/5.56x45mm, that is VERY well regarded. It takes AR-15 magazines (common, inexpensive, and reliable) and stores quite compactly, and gives you better ballistics than a pistol caliber carbine while retaining the advantage of light recoil.

Here's the Kel-Tec pistol-caliber carbine:

And two versions of their folding rifle:

SU-16A (California legal)

SU-16C

The only concerns I've ever heard about the Kel-Tec carbines is their relative fragility compared to some other carbines, due to the lightweight construction and the way the folding mechanism is configured, and the fact that they are rather prone to rust if not kept well oiled.

A stainless Ruger mini-14 or Mini Thirty with a folding stock and good magazines could also be a decent choice. Mini's are absolutely reliable, are easy to take apart and clean without tools, and aren't fragile. Here's what a mini-14 looks like with a folder (this is my mini-14 Ranch Rifle with a Butler Creek stock):

Stock extended

Stock folded for storage, with 30-round magazine.

That barrel is 18.5", but you could have a gunsmith cut it down to 16.1" and move the front sight back, and it'd be even more compact. It's not the most accurate gun in the world (5" groups or so at 100 yards), but if you're shooting from a boat, then reliability, capacity, and good ergonomics are more important that the ability to shoot super-tight groups on dry land. Also, if you put into a port where the local authorities are squeamish about modern-looking rifles, you can make the mini look like an old-fashioned cowboy-style carbine in about a minute, by swapping the stock:

With the straight stock, the mini-14 is also legal in California, where protruding handgrips on rifles are against the law. (Note that the Kel-Tec SU-16A rifle is California-legal, whereas the Kel-Tec pistol-caliber carbine and the SU-16C are not.)

9. I have one in .40 caliber.
It's pretty fun, and seems quite accurate, too.

10. Yeah, I Love Mine
Had it a little over a year now Keltec Sub2K .40 SW with the Glock Mag config
Now I just need a Glock to go with it. They both use same mags.

The thing had amazing accuracy right from the box. Want to hang
a Holographic sight, green daytime laser and a tac light on it
like all my new buddies at the Keltec Owners Group Website do.

ktog.org

It's just mindboggling how many accessories these guys are sticking
on a $250 carbine, but that's the fun of it. As rambo black rifle as
you can get.

Would also like to have their 5.65 model the SU-16C
but I'm lucky to afford the 40 cal ammo
