So far this season I have one doe and one turkey
It's supposed to get colder starting Wednesday night. 31 to 34 degrees starting Wednesday night near Fort McKavett which is 10 miles from where I hunt. That should get them moving better than they are now.

1. I shot a big doe today.
We got snow yesterday and the first storm always gets them moving. I wasn't at my stand more than 10 minutes this morning when two does came by. One stopped in an opening, and just like that my freezer is full.

2. Got an Axis in upper Uvalde County Nov. 23. Saw a lot more...

Cold, windy, overcast and off-and-on drizzle had the deer up and about; I think they couldnt' figure the weather and worked overtime to eat. I got caught walking up a lane by two bucks; may as well have been butt-naked and singing Bob Wills songs. But I stayed still and they whiffed my trail and merely walked in a straight line into the brush. Obviously, they were sniffing doe _______. And just as obviously, I wasn't going to get a clear shot. One of those guys had a South Texas rack, even though we were in the southern slopes of the Edward's Plateau. But an hour later I still hunted a mesquite flat and saw an adult spike Axis. I had to off-hand a shot and missed. Fortunately, the Axis just stepped a few feet further and froze, looking for the sound source. I made another 120 yd. off-hand and hit him through both legs and chest. He went down 60 yards later. These guys are great tasting, deep wine-colored meat.

Damn, you got a turkey, too? I hope to get another chance at them this season. I will be at Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge in Travis Co. this weekend (predicted mild but possible rain Saturday). I've scouted this place out and hunted it before: rugged, 410' elevation within 3,700 acres; 10 other hunters out there, too. Rough hunting. Well, my project Wednesday is to butcher and freezer wrap Axis, bold as love!

Hey, Redneck! This was supposed to be under Bear, but hell, congratulations to you, too. I'd love to try and hunt in the snow -- doesn't happen too often in Texas.

3. Got a really nice buck Thursday
I hunt on an 80 acre tract owned by my family. I got there at 4pm and was field dressing by 5:15. We had 3 lbs of burger left from last year, we eat 3 or 4 lbs per week so the timing was perfect. In KS I get an either sex permit for the first one then antlerless only for up to 4 more. I hope to get at least 1 doe/button buck before the season is out. Here is a link to the pic my mother-in-law insisted on.

Don't look if you do not want to see a dead deer!

5. yes I did.
As a kid I used to read Peterson's Hunting every month. I always wanted to hunt with a handgun. I bought a Thompson Contender when I was 16 (no parent present), and never did any good with it. In retrospect I think I was afraid of it. My son shot his first deer 3 years ago so I gave him the family rifle (he is the 4th generation) a dreaded semi auto Remington 742. Finally I had the excuse I needed to try hand gunning again so last year I bought the S&W Model 29-2 .44 Mag. Of course my motivation to buy that particular gun is it being the exact make and model used by Dirty Harry :D . I will be selling it now, I think I want to try a Thompson Contender again next year.

6. That movie sold more 44s than any advertising campaign ever could.
I believe there is a documentary on that, but I can't recall the title at the moment.

I carried a Taurus 44 deer hunting for one season, never shot anything and later sold the gun. I keep eying the Thompson's though. I'm sure I'll get one one of these days.

Why is the 742 "dreaded?" Those are pretty classic guns in my neck of the woods.

7. The 742 is a truly great rifle
purchased by my grand dad in the 1950's, used by my dad until his death in 2000, I shot my first deer with it in 1980 and used it from 2000 until last year, now my son uses it. I only say dreaded because of the stigma of removable magazine semi auto rifles.

8. That's a good one! I'll be trying for my 3rd on Monday, but rain & cold forecast...
in Fort Boggy State Park (Leon Co., Texas). This damned rainy weather has been with me for three hunts, now! Unfortunately, weather for Mon - Wed is predicted to be rainy, windy, but cold. Kinda wish Texas Parks & Wildlife would cancel the hunt; what self-respecting deer will get out of bed in driving rain? Oh, well...
