RIP, Kurt Vonnegut
I've reached the age when I read the obituaries, dreading to spot the names of friends. But when your heroes die, it really hits you in the gut. So it goes.

The NYT article concludes with a poem by Vonnegut:

When the last living thing

has died on account of us,

how poetical it would be

if Earth could say,

in a voice floating up

perhaps

from the floor

of the Grand Canyon,

“It is done.”

People did not like it here.

1. So it goes.

A fellow teacher has his American Literature students read "Cat's Cradle." The high school juniors of 2007 respond in much the same way my friends and I responded 20 years ago. They laugh. They question. They think. They want more.

There are so many accolades Kurt could be hailed with, but I think the greatest would be to say that he was not the voice of his generation. His voice, his message, his example transcended generations.

Thank you for everything Kurt.

Here's my wish for you: "Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt."

2. It's like losing a family member.
It really is.
