A Call to Reason, May 14, 2005 New York City
Albert Ellis Institute, Center for Inquiry-International
Announce Joint Affiliation: A Call to Reason, May 14, 2005

AMHERST, N.Y. (April 14, 2005)--The Albert Ellis Institute and
the Center for Inquiry-International, home of the Council for
Secular Humanism, will convene in New York City at the Albert
Ellis Institute on Saturday, May 14th, 2005, to formally
announce a joint affiliation at a special one-day conference
titled "A Call to Reason."

The event will be held at the Albert Ellis Institute, located at
45 East 65th Street in New York City, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30
p.m. on May 14. Admission fee is $50 and is open to the public.

Additional information can be obtained via the Institute's Web
site at http://ga1.org/ct/dd_Xvf11jPte/ (or through
http://ga1.org/ct/d1_Xvf11jPt3/) or by calling the Albert
Ellis Institute directly at (212) 535-0822 or toll-free at (800)
323-4738; or e-mail [email protected]

Both organizations--committed to reason and science--deplore the
increased dominance of irrationalism in modern culture. With
centers and institutes worldwide, they will collaborate in
sponsoring joint projects.

Featured speakers at the conference will be Albert Ellis,
considered to be one of the leading psychologists in the world,
and philosopher Paul Kurtz, the "father of secular humanism."
There will also be an open floor discussion.

During their long and distinguished careers, in a myriad of
books and articles, Kurtz and Ellis have argued for a kind of
naturalistic self-actualization--an approach to the happy life
that is humanistic, affirmative, and constructive--yielding
joyful living and creativity. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
(REBT), a humanistic, action-oriented approach to emotional
growth, was first developed by Dr. Ellis in 1955. It is now
widely regarded as the most influential form of therapy in the
United States; at present, an estimated 12,000 psychologists,
psychiatrists, and counselors are using REBT and
cognitive-behavior therapy worldwide.

Paul Kurtz, a longstanding critic of pseudoscience and
fundamentalist dogmas, declared that it is important to use
reason and science to extend the parameters of human
happiness--joyful and rational exuberance instead of simple
quiescent satisfaction. "The power of achieving the good life is
within the grasp of every person!" said Kurtz.

"People are often so unreasonable," said Albert Ellis. "I will
show volunteers from the audience how to effectively use
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy to solve some of their own
problems."
