Betty Bowers update!
I figure most of you visit her already. But just in case...

Man, THIS would be a great site for some of those uber-sensitive Xians to visit!

Here's the deal: You don't tell me about your personal savior -- I don't tell you about my personal yeast infection.

1. I need to read Betty more often
I love this:

Meanwhile, the Terri Schiavo of Rome, that Polish transvestite the Pope (also known to Jesus and me as the King of the Mary Worshippers) has lost his ability to communicate to such an appalling degree that -- finally! -- his sermons are worth listening to.

3. I used a Betty Bowers quiz in a Sunday School class
I taught the high school Sunday School class at my church last year, and one of the best lessons we had was built around a quiz on "How to Spot a True Christian" that I got off the Betty Bowers website (or it might have been on the Landover Baptist website).

It relied on some of the most obscure Bible passages about appropriate attire, hairstyles and accessories for Godly men and women. If we followed the scripture cited in the quiz, all the girls in my class were going to hell for wearing earrings and pants. The boys either cut their hair too much or not enough - you get the picture.

The whole point of the lesson was that it is ok to question scripture, to be unsure. Not just ok, but healthy and necessary for continuous spiritual growth. The kids really loved it - not just the funny quiz, but the deep discussion that followed.

Sorry - here I am again posting in a group to which I don't belong. I don't mean to intrude - I just have a lot in common with many here, and enjoy the discourse (well, MOST of it, anyway!)

:-)

5. Am I out of line?
Given the recent actions taken by DU moderators that locked many threads in this discussion group and others, I want to make sure that my posts here, as a liberal Christian and not an atheist or agnostic, are not inappropriate. I'm not at all arguing with the moderators' decisions, just want to check in with folks here on how you feel about non-atheists/agnostics posting to this group.

I've only posted four times total here, and all four came in the past few days. But I've been reading this group ever since it was started, and have always found real value in the overall discourse among all of you. The last thing I want to do is intrude or alienate any of you.

For what it is worth....I LOVE Betty Bowers and I LOVE Landover Baptist - and I've been visiting both sites far longer than I've been a registered member of DU!

6. I have no serious objection
Only a warning. This in the end is the atheist/agnostic haven. Steam will be blown off here from time to time and at such times consideration of viewing believers will not be taken into consideration. If this is something you can handle then I see no reason someone such as yourself cannot contribute and learn here.

7. I've lurked here for several weeks and
never once felt moved to post in protest of anything offensive to me as a Christian. This is your haven, not mine. I respect that, just as I hope others will respect the Liberal Christianity DU group as a haven for progressive Christians.

I am a true believer when it comes to the Golden Rule. Enough said, in my book.

I do not plan to become a regular poster here. I doubt I'll post again for a while, if ever. Recent events moved me, as a Christian, to post some words of encouragement and support for atheists/agnostics in this forum. I do not expect to become an active member of this group, though I hope no one is offended by me stopping by every now and then. Again, I respect the reasons these DU groups were formed and I respect the target audience in each group.

8. Do stop by again!
You seem to "know" us pretty well. And I get a laugh out of anybody using Betty Bowers to teach Sunday School.

I'm sure you've seen me blowing off steam in here. Sometimes I just can't take one more smarmy quasi-sermon or accusation that I'm ready to start shipping believers off to the camps, and I come here to rant.

Obviously you don't fit into those categories. And if I don't see you in here, I'll see you in True Crime.

10. Thanks!
Here's a link to the quiz I used in the youth Sunday School class:

There are other great quizzes for those - Christian and non-Christian - with a sense of humor!

11. Hey, I sure don't have any problems with you here.
The fact that you were willing to present such a "quiz" to your class means you've got a more open mind than even a lot of Christians on DU.

Please, by all means, feel free to share your perspective!
