Cenk Goes Off On Religion With General Wesley Clark's Son
I agree with him 100%, but I have a feeling that .

Hopefully I'm wrong.

18. Good! I'm surprised more people didn't get pissed in the video section though.
Maybe they did but decided not to comment after reading my short disclaimer, I don't know.

3. The only people it'll piss off
are religious moderates who use themselves as human shields to defend fundamentalists from criticism.

Fundie says to followers, "God commands you to kill the non-believers and His will must be done!"

-Atheist says, "That's terrible--here's a prime example of how religion leads to bad things"
-Moderate says to Atheist, "Shame on you for being so intolerant of religion--you're just as bad as the Fundie."
-Moderate ignores Fundie.

Fundie's followers go out and kill non-believers.

-Atheist says, "See! This is exactly what I said would happen."
-Moderate says to Atheist, "This wasn't because of religion and how dare you suggest otherwise. Extremists are a problem, but you're driving away your allies with your broad-brush attacks on religion. The holy book of the murderers in this case forbids them from doing what they did, so it can't be religion."

7. BWAH HA HA HA
Oh man, that's just one square short of perfect - there needs to be one mentioning Stalin and/or Pol Pot as "proof" that atheism is directly responsible for the murder of millions and it's complete! Did you make it?

9. No, I found it but don't remember where.
If you do a google image search for liberal christian bingo, there are a bunch of results, but I've found this to be the best.

I am thinking of moving some of the squares around since there are some squares that almost never get hits and others that consistently do.

11. Check out LBN today.
Couple kills baby while attempting EXORCISM. That is, driving out DEMONS.

Summing up the responses by the Usual Suspects: "Religion had nothing to do with this horrible crime!"

Jeez, this could be a beautiful forest, if somebody would just move all these damn trees out of the way...

Oh, and as always in those threads, one poster apparently used psychic powers to decide all atheists have "paniful baggage" from their religious upbringing.

Usually I don't respond to such pathetic bargain-basement psychologizing. But that one triggered my Inner Stalin and I did.

13. You have to look at it from their point of view:
"I'm a Christian. I don't believe that people are possessed by demons and no one I know has ever performed an exorcism. If anyone does believe that stuff, then they're not representative of my religion. Therefore, the issue is crazy people using religion to justify their mental illness."

These people are more deluded than fundamentalists. The mental gymnastics required to make reality conform to their religious views are breathtaking.

14. Actually, your hypothetical quote doesn't seem all that bad
Not all religious people are that nuts.

But the saner ones don't try to do anything about the crazies. They don't try to protect their belief system from corruption by the likes of the SBC and all their TV preachers.

And they're the only ones who could do anything about it -- leave and go to another church, stop giving money, make public statements against all the nonsense -- because anyone who criticizes the church from the outside is just written off as some kind of interloper. It has to be Christians that put a stop to these excesses because no one else is even eligible.

But they don't take this kind of thing on; they just disclaim it.

-----

As for mental gymnastics...

"I believe a perfect and loving God created a place to torture everyone -- forever -- because the first two people disobeyed one order and tried to know something he didn't want them to know.

Then, after thousands of years, he implemented a plan to let us off the hook.

He started by arranging to have himself killed -- because he couldn't get over it without killing someone.

After that, he erased all hard evidence of his existence and turned all of human life into a giant, ultimate-stakes game of Let's Make a Deal. Pick the right door -- believe the right doctrine concerning his identity and wishes for us -- and it's perfect happiness forever. Pick any one of the wrong doors and it's back to torture forever.

That's what I believe."

You don't really need the witches, demons, etc to make the case that their faith is just plain nuts; it just plain is.

16. I think of it more in terms that moderates are the base
that fundy nutjobs sink their claws into. Either one works.

10. It was so good to hear Cenk's take on religion
It is refreshing to have people like Bill Maher and Cenk saying this stuff in the mainstream. Maybe the tide is turning.

For some reason Mr. Cenk annoys me. I'm not sure if it's his voice or his demeanor. Just something that kind of gives me the fingernails on the chalkboard vibe.
