Anybody else think part of the GOP's apparent melt-down is due to fundy exhaustion?

OK, the rest of the GOP message isn't playing well either, but I'm wondering whether a lot of people are just sick and tired of having creationism and abstinence-only "sex ed" forced into their classrooms, the Terry Schiavo-type nonsense and being generally embarrassed in front of the entire world for letting the fundamentalist tail wag the dog.

1. I think the Terry Schiavo case is certainly part of it

Republicans were doing things in the middle of the night as if it was a national emergency, and the 'small government' conservatives, or independents, looked at that and thought "why are they trying to dictate how people's personal decisions are made?" So they lost some people who otherwise would have been possible supporters. But when Palin was named as their VP choice, that made them think "here we go again" for the religious ideologues trying to be in charge, and that has been a significant part of the drop in McCain's poll numbers.

2. I think it's more about personal finances.

People are assessing the damage and realizing another Republican administration will only make it worse.

And there hasn't been another terrorist attack, so they're more inclined to take what they might otherwise consider too big a risk.

5. Couldn't agree more.

It is unfortunate that it took a calamity of this magnitude to do it, but people are voting their pocketbooks this year, and they trust the Democrats and Obama more than they trust the party who brought us to this point.

3. And the problems with fundy leaders like Ted Haggard didn't help their "cause"

I think the reasons for their disillusionment are varied but there does seem to be a correlation with fundy meltdown and the GOP meltdown. They were so intertwined for so long.

4. Yes, people are sick of sanctimonious shits

who think because they say they love Jebus their ticket to heaven is punched and they can be total assholes on earth.

Hiding behind the cross is not playing as well as it did a decade ago. In addition, kids who are believers are loath to self identify as Christians because the Christofascists have given them all such a bad name.
