Did anyone here see "Atonement"? POTENTIAL SPOILERS
Actually, merely posting this thread in this forum is a potential spoiler.

I thought the movie was very well done, and it made me curious to read the book on which it is based. I saw the film as a story about why we, as human beings, create the idea of an afterlife. It suggest that we do so as a way of easing our feelings of quilt and responsibility over our own sins and mistakes. It seemed to me to be a very subtle yet powerful atheistic film.

Did anyone else see it and share my impression? Has anyone read the book?

1. We saw it last weekend.
And liked it very much. I recommend it. A chic flick as my wife puts it, but I like chic flicks too. One of my family thought it was a Jane Austin book, but my wife has read all of them and didn't remember that one. On the way into the movies we ran into a friend who did read the book, but didn't have time to discuss it.

I can't say whether it was atheistic. There was certainly a lot of guilt and atonement for her sins. Nw that you mention it, I could see how it might be interpreted (the way the idea of an afterlife is created) as atheistic. I liked Vanessa Redgrave.

2. I read the book a few years back and enjoyed it. I read it
because I like the author (Ian McEwan)and read several of his books back to back at that time. I will see the movie within the next few days.Even though I remember that I liked the story (as I do all of his)I don't remember the details. Hopefully it will all come back when I see the movie.

3. I thought it was a chic flick...
and I do care to see such films in the theater.
