Action alert -- need people to write LTTEs to the Detroit News
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 05:55 PM by SharonRB
In today's Detroit News, there is an article entitled "Seven questions about the 2008 campaign." Here's a link to the article and the text of #5 that requires a response. We need to tell them loud and clear that there is much yearning for Gore to enter the race.

I'm getting ready to write my letter now. I'd love to see them get letters from all over the country!

Write them at: [email protected]

Sharon

5 . Is it too late for Al Gore or Newt Gingrich to get into the race?

Yes. Not that they couldn't jump in. But the prospects do not look bright for either.

"It's not too late for Al Gore and Newt to get in, but it's certainly too late for either of them to win," Newhouse said.

The entry into the race by former senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee means far less room for Gingrich, and the former House speaker carries very high negatives. Gore has significant popularity among Democrats, but because Democrats are happy with their candidates, there is no real yearning for him to enter.

4. Done! Here's my LTTE
This letter is in response to your oped of Wednesday, September 05, 2007
“Seven questions about 2008 campaign” by Dan Balz of the Washington Post.
Mr. Bolz said: “Gore has significant popularity among Democrats, but because Democrats are happy with their candidates, there is no real yearning for him to enter.”

I beg to differ.

It is imperative that the next person elected president have every tool possible to even begin the attempt to restore this country to some semblance of its former self. He or she must find a way to deal with the occupation in Iraq and international terrorism, the record-breaking national debt and a shaky economy, the healthcare crisis, the erosion of our Constitutional rights, and (last but not least) global warming. Any one of these issues would be a full time job, but all require immediate attention.

The current Democratic candidates each have some of the qualifications I would deem essential to address these issues, but Mr. Gore is the only one with all of the qualifications. He responds effectively to crises, as evinced by his unsung heroics during Hurricane Katrina; he has vision and the determination to implement it, as he was responsible for making the internet accessible to all and for the ever widening awareness of the climate crisis; he has the experience of a congressman, a senator, and a vice president; he has a passionate love for this country and the rule of law (read The Assault on Reason); and he has a veritable army of supporters ready to leap into the fray and/or donate to his campaign should he choose to announce his candidacy.

Isn’t it time to elect someone who could be a real president, and not just play one on T.V.?

Sincerely,

5. Love this!
Great job! :applause:

I would only change one thing - add a little more clarification about the internet issue - people reading this will still be under the delusion of that smear.

Yearning for Al Gore

In question #5 in your article "Seven questions about 2008 campaign" on September 5, 2007, you state that "...but because Democrats are happy with their candidates, there is no real yearning for him (Al Gore) to enter." This couldn't be farther from the truth. I've been working in the Draft Gore movement since January of this year, and there are thousands upon thousands of people all over the country who are, in fact, yearning for him to enter the race. Even if they are currently supporting other Democratic candidates, many of these people will switch their support to Gore the minute he jumps in. The WXYZ/Detroit News poll of a few weeks ago that shows him in the lead when he is included in the poll proves this. Among the netroots, in particular, there is enormous support and yearning for him to run. He is the favored candidate on every major progressive blog and Web site by far.

Although the Democrats have a good field from which to choose, none of the current candidates have the entire package like Al Gore does -- each of them has some flaw. Al Gore gets it -- from global warming to the war in Iraq to health care, he is the strongest candidate on all of the issues and the most electable in the general election. As seen in his book, "The Assault on Reason," he understands what these past six years have done to our country and what we have to do to help heal ourselves and our reputation around the world.

We, and the world, need Al Gore.
