Reenlistment is a Privilege!
This is from our new commander in Baghdad, thought y'all'd get a kick out of this statement about reenlistment policy, dated January 24, 2006:

1. Reenlistment is not a right, it is a privilege. Those soldiers who have demonstrated potential for future development and have maintained a record of acceptable performance will be offered the privilege of reenlisting.

Don't think I'll take advantage of the privilege, even should I earn it.

:nopity:

1. A Privilege???
Shit!

A 'privilege' pretty much means one could take it or leave it right?

Your war-pig commander needs to explain 'Privilege' to the people caught in the stop-loss or the IRR recalls. They must've really demonstrated potential for future development... so much so that the Army is involuntarily recalling them!!!!!!

Here's a word for him: fratricide ...
That's what'd happen if some bozo tried to talk to me about reenlisting while I was in Iraq.

More words from a fellow pissed-off Iraq Vet ...

2. IRR
The really good thing is that this unit is about 1/2 back-door drafted IRR, myself included. We were forced into this privilege.

5. Back door drafted?
Just curious but had you already fulfilled your entire eight year obligation or did you still owe them some time?

4. Why is the military so eager to pay for the privilege?
There are some nice re-up bonuses being offered for the "privilege".

I served on a nuclear submarine in the late 70s, early 80s. The Navy offered a $20K bonus to nuclear technicians to re-up. One our "aft" nuclear-trained electricans took the offer, got the money and bought a brand new Corvette. He also admitted that he was gay as hell.

The Navy promptly gave him a medical discharge. He got out, married a nice blond and got a job at a local power plant in Hawaii.

From what I heard, the Navy had a spate of sailors pulling that stunt. They had to rewrite their policies concerning gays because of it.

6. Strictly monetary.
It's cheaper to pay $20k, $30k, or more to keep a trained, experienced guy in uniform than it is to train a new one from the ground up.

7. Reenlistment IS a Privilege!
I'm proud to have the privilege to serve, as well as to serve in OIF. I'm a proud registered Democrat.

If this is problematic for those unsupportive of the war than oh well.

I believe in the mission in Iraq.

As an American and a dem that's my choice. I salute Sen. Lieberman for his support I salute Congressman Murtha for his service and respect his opinion despite disagreeing with him.

I've always believed the Democratic party was about tolerance.

9. Aren't something like 97% of all army officers promoted, no matter what?
What do you have to do - other than be gay - to get kicked out of the service these days?

10. This has gotta be a joke. They offered me ten grand many
years ago to reenlist. I didn't. I got out of there.

12. Like a dummy, I took the $10K in 1966.
That little indiscretion got me a ticket for two trips to Viet Nam.
