Deadline for retention bonuses approaching
Deadline for retention bonuses approaching

The application window for the Army’s unprecedented captain retention incentive program is about to close.

The Dec. 14 deadline applies to cash bonus options of up to $35,000, and certain assignment and schooling opportunities.

The deadline for Army-funded graduate school attendance expired Oct. 19, and for branch and functional area transfers Nov. 23. However, officers who were not selected for these programs can apply for the options that expire Dec. 14.

The target population is a cohort of nearly 18,000 Regular Army captains in year groups 1999-2004 who are members of one of the basic branches, or the Medical Service Corps or Nurse Corps.

Since the program opened in mid-September, nearly 9,500 captains have extended their service in exchange for one of the five options.

The most popular is the bonus option, which as of Nov. 29 had generated 8,875 service extension contracts, including 3,725 for the $35,000 bonus targeted at captains in shortage career branches.
