The Army Reserve “is very, very healthy” as it celebrates its 100th birthday next year, but the component faces some key challenges, Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz said Tuesday.

Stultz, commanding general of the Army Reserve, was speaking to soldiers during the Association of the United States Army’s annual convention in Washington, D.C.

“2008 is a significant milestone year,” he said of the anniversary.

The Reserve surpassed its recruiting goals for 2007, bringing in more than 27,000 new soldiers, Stultz said. The goal was 26,500. The Reserve also exceeded its retention goals, keeping more career and first-term soldiers than expected, he said.

“What it says is the soldiers are sticking with us,” Stultz said. “As I travel around and see these soldiers, it’s awe-inspiring to see the quality of our troops. These are soldiers who don’t have to be there.”

Despite the good news in recruiting and retention, the Reserve continues to struggle to build its end strength.
