Grafenwöhr rec center plans take shape
Grafenwöhr rec center plans take shape
By Mark Abramson, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Saturday, October 31, 2009

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Plans to build a sprawling recreation center to help soldiers returning from downrange blow off steam are taking shape at U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwöhr.

The $11.8 million, 20,500-square-foot project will provide high-adrenaline challenges for the soldiers, such as a high-ropes course and a climbing wall, garrison commander Col. Chris Sorenson said.

The facility also would have a paintball range, trails and open field areas by a lake in the garrison’s training area, he said.

The idea of the center, which could open sometime in 2013, is to deliver as many of the activities in the Army’s Warrior Adventure Quest program as possible, Audrey Binder, director for Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Grafenwöhr, said.

Warrior Adventure Quest programs in the Army are designed to boost soldiers’ mental toughness to help them cope with post-deployment stress.

unhappycamper comment: I want whatever Mark is smoking. Grafenwöhr is on the eastern side of Germany near Nuremberg and Kaiserslautern is on the western side of Germany near the French border.

2. Graf or K-town?
I was stationed in Kitzigen Am Maine and Wuertzberg in the early 70s.

3. I came down to Graf from Bad Hersfeld in 1971 to play Army
It was cold and muddy...just a tad better than Wildflecken. I spent 45 days at Graf and that was enough for me.

4. When I arrived in Amberg, Germany at the 3rd Sq.
2nd AC back in February of 69 only a couple people were on post, everyone was in Grafenwohr. The next morning I was loaded on a 2 1/2 truck for Grafenwohr, we had nothing but mud and freezing rain the entire stay. We slept in a squad tent and you had to wade through mud for like 100 meters to take a shower. What a first impression of Germany that was.
