MOSUL, Iraq — Four American soldiers were injured and an Iraqi interpreter was killed Tuesday when two Iraqi police officers opened fire on them in this northern city, according to U.S. military officials.

According to initial reports, the soldiers and two interpreters were having lunch with the police officers when they opened fire. The other interpreter was wounded.

There were conflicting reports on whether the gunmen were apprehended. The military has not released the survivors’ names or medical conditions.

The shooting was the latest in a string of similar incidents involving Iraqi security forces in the Mosul area.

On Nov. 25, a Marine and an Army soldier were killed when a man in an Iraqi army uniform opened fire while they were giving out blankets near Baaj, southwest of Mosul near the Syrian border. Two Marines and three Iraqi civilians were wounded in what military officials said seemed to be unprovoked attack.
