COLUMBUS, Ga. — The National Response Team of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been called in to investigate a fire that destroyed the Judge Advocate General’s office at Fort Benning.

The ATF team arrived Monday and began working the scene alongside military investigators conducting interviews and sifting through debris to determine the cause of Friday’s fire.

The Criminal Investigation Command on post said the fire destroyed the 10,000-square-foot structure, left files in question and caused the relocation of basic legal services at Fort Benning.

The ATF team was developed in 1978 to help federal, state and local investigators of major fires and explosions, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the Oklahoma City federal building bombing.
