BEAUFORT, S.C. — Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort says the Blue Angels will return to the base in 2009, two years after a Navy pilot died there in a fiery crash.

The station said Monday that the Navy’s elite aerial demonstration team will perform in free public events May 16 and 17.

Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Davis died in April 2007 when he crashed his F/A-18 Hornet in a residential area near the base. Navy investigators determined the 32-year-old became disoriented after a high-speed turn subjected him to six times the force of gravity.

Davis was in his first season flying with the team. A report found he erred by not properly tensing his abdominal muscles. Eight people on the ground were injured, and some homes were damaged.
