IRR Marines Can Stay Deployed

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — For those who want to stay, Individual Ready Reserve Marines on involuntary orders now can extend to remain deployed.

IRR Marines cannot be mobilized for more than a year, which allows just 12 months to complete predeployment training, redeployment, demobilization and take accrued leave. That doesn’t leave enough time for those Marines to complete a seven-month deployment.

But Marine administrative message 689/08, released Dec. 8, allows IRR Marines to voluntarily extend.

Officials with the Corps’ Manpower Plans Division in Quantico, Va., say they do not know how many IRR Marines have asked to extend their mobilizations.

“However, has received enough requests to warrant the publication of this MarAdmin to streamline the procedure,” manpower officials said in a written statement.
