The Navy will test two new uniforms based design of the new blue and gray digital cammies, scheduled to hit the fleet in January.

Vice Adm. John C. Harvey, director of the navy staff, approved “the wear-testing of two variations of a digital desert and woodland Navy Working Uniform as potential replacements for the current camouflage utility uniform,” according to a NavAdmin message released Wednesday.

“These new uniforms will be evaluated for their functionality, performance and practicality by sailors requiring camouflage uniforms to perform their day-to-day mission,” Harvey wrote.

He went on to say that exact features of these uniform and who will test them will be announced in a future message. No timetable was given for the tests.

Currently woodland or desert pattern battle dress uniforms are issued to sailors at the command level as organizational clothing and are not considered seabag uniforms. The message said the new variants would be designed to replace the existing command-issued BDUs, and would not replace the new Navy Working Uniform in the seabag. The NWU will become mandatory for everyone in the Navy, E-1 through O-10, in January 2011.
