Benning soldier discharged in trainee beating

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Fort Benning officials say a soldier who assaulted a Jewish trainee in September has been kicked out of the Army.

Fort Benning spokesman Bob Purtiman said Monday the accused soldier received an administrative discharge in the beating of Pvt. Michael Handman.

Handman was assaulted in September days after he complained of religious harassment in his basic training unit. The 20-year-old solder from Atlanta had to be treated at an Army hospital for a concussion and bruising to his face.

The Army confirmed Handman’s attacker had been discharged after Bill Nigut, southeast regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said he learned of the punishment at a meeting with Fort Benning officials Friday.

Officials said last month that Handman’s attacker had been punished administratively but refused to release further details, citing federal privacy laws.
