LAWTON, Okla. — Police arrested a Fort Sill soldier on a second-degree murder charge Thursday in the death of his 23-month-old baby.

Authorities say 22-year-old Michael Jeffries was arrested after a state medical examiner’s report noted the injuries suffered by Vincent Johnson were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Lawton Police Capt. Will Hines said prosecutors filed the murder charge against the soldier, who is from Texas. Jeffries’ arraignment is set for Friday.

Court documents indicate the baby was taken to a Lawton hospital Oct. 4 in a comatose state and was later flown to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he died two days later.

Police detectives said Jeffries told them he didn’t know what happened to the baby. Court records do not list an attorney for Jeffries.
