PHENIX CITY, Ala. — Authorities say a high-speed chase in Phenix City, Ala., ended in the death of a Fort Benning soldier. It happened early Tuesday when a police officer attempted to stop two motorcyclists for speeding.

Phenix City police said the chase lasted about a mile and ended when 24-year-old Jerell Taylor lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a brick mailbox. He died at the scene.

According to the county coroner’s office, Taylor was a native of Sumter, S.C., and had recently returned from duty from Iraq.

The other motorcyclist fled the scene.

Alabama state troopers are investigating.
